Boys lacrosse: Schaumburg's work is yielding results

Schaumburg's boys lacrosse team has been a work in progress for coach Joe Carey. The strides the Saxons have taken are starting to pay dividends.

Thursday night at Palatine, Schaumburg climbed to the .500 mark with a 10-0 win over the winless Pirates.

The Saxons sport a 2-0 mark in the Mid-Suburban West. They have won 4 of the last 6 conference titles.

"Our chemistry is building as a team," said senior attacker Alec Greenholdt. "This was an important win for us. We started the game off a little sloppy but we finished the first quarter well and that gave us a chance to get other players in the game. Our confidence is building as team, and our defense just keeps getting better."

Freshman Anthony Komperda started the scoring has he dodged through Pirate defenders to score with 6:04 left in the first quarter.

With 2:09 left in the quarter, Schaumburg received goals from Cam Conroy, Greenholdt and Andrew Feucht for a 4-0 lead. Greenholdt also had an assist on Feucht's goal.

"Last year we had only a few scorers but this year we've been able to spread the scoring around," said Greenholdt.

Palatine (0-5, 0-2) had trouble getting off shots throughout the game. Palatine was only able to get off 11 shots with goalie Lucas Dudek making 6 saves in the shutout. The Saxons fired off 38 shots on goal. Palatine goalie Rand Paddack made 17 saves.

"When we watched game films of Palatine," said senior defenseman Nick Reiger, "we saw they liked to fastbreak. We were able to close up our defense and keep them away from the net. With the offense controlling the ball as much as they did, we were able to stay fresh on defense. We really communicated well which helped us get the shutout. We're looking forward to our next three conference games."

Schaumburg went on the offensive again to start the third quarter by scoring 4 goals.

Greenholdt scored his second to go with 2 assists, which were followed by Conroy's second goal, Jon Sorg's goal and Isaiah Garcia goal. Chris Scislowski had 2 assists in the quarter.

Freshmen Tyler Sarna scored both of the Saxons' goal in the fourth quarter.

"We started out sloppy but battled through it," said Carey. "We built some confidence early when we had those goals at the end of the first quarter. Right now we're just looking to get better and better. We got the 'W' but didn't play to the best of our ability. We have a young team and are still learning."

Palatine coach John Cygnar was disappointed in his team's performance.

"We did not play our game at all," said Cygnar. "There was too much individual play. We didn't bring what we had done in practice to the field."
