Baseball: Majer drives Conant past Wheeling

Matt Majer singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning to help Conant complete a 3-run rally in an 8-7 victory over visiting Wheeling on Thursday in Mid-Suburban League baseball.

Wheeling had produced its own 3-run rally in the top half of the sixth inning.

The outcome leaves Conant unbeaten in MSL play at 3-0; the Cougars improved to 6-5-1 overall.

Mason Sykes homered and drove in 3 runs for Conant. Jon Bustamante, Cole Kilty and Christian Seegers each doubled and Sam Ryan and Dave Sapyta had 2 hits apiece.

Kyle Bullock was a force for Wheeling, finishing 4-for-5 with a double. Cade Kaplan finished 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI, while Cade Zalewski doubled twice and Drew Roberts drove in 2 runs.

Conant reliever Joe Pavletich earned the win, and Kilty got the save. Both pitched 1 scoreless inning.

St. Viator 8, Benet Academy 3: The big inning was a 4-run fourth as the host Lions got RBI from Jason Fitzmaurice, Casey Kmet, Hunter Johnson and Bryce Hellgeth in East Suburban Catholic Conference play.

Hellgeth, Nick Surdo and Conor Warner each doubled for St. Viator (9-4, 1-1), which finished with 7 hits, 6 walks and stolen bases from Warner, Jake Sinnema and Jack Mahoney.

That was more than enough support for Johnson, who tossed a complete game and allowed 6 hits.

Prospect 7, Geneva 4: The host Knights got some big hits in claiming a nonconference win to snap a four-game slide.

Anthony Composto led the way by finishing 3-for-3 a homer, a double, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.

Richie Baczek had a pair of hits, including a double, and Ethan Burgh doubled and drove in 2 runs for Prospect (6-5).

Jack Ankony started and earned the win; John Czeslawski hurled 3 scoreless in relief to get the save.

Palatine 4, Schaumburg 2: Jake Andersen's 2-run single in Palatine's 3-run fifth inning helped the Pirates come from behind in an MSL West win.

Starter Joshua Rivera didn't allow the Saxons much, yielding 2 hits and 6 walks while striking out seven over 6⅓ innngs. Thomas Soby got the final two outs, and a save.

Luke Stoffel and TJ Skelnik both had a pair of hits for the Pirates (10-7, 2-2), and Josh Stitt drove in a run.

Zach Studzinski, who suffered the pitching loss, had both of Schaumburg's hits - one of them a double - and he drove in both Saxons runs.

Buffalo Grove 6, Hersey 5: The visiting Bison scored twice in the top of the seventh inning, the second run coming across on a wild pitch, in a come-from-behind win in MSL East play.

Mac Camardo, Tyler Concialdi and Rio Komatani each finished with 2 hits for BG. Camardo, Concialdi and Riley Rundquist had doubles.

Cristian Rodriguez enjoyed a 3-for-4 day at the plate for Hersey (5-9-1, 2-2). A.J. Ceffalio and James Denten had 2 hits apiece.

Dan Pocklington earned a win in relief for the Bison.
