Softball: Benner ties Meadows' home run mark

Rolling Meadows junior Sara Benner, who entered Thursday's nonconference softball game hitting .684, kept her hot hand with the bat by going 3-for-5 and belting her sixth home run of the season in a 16-12 triumph over visiting St. Viator.

It was also the 16th career home run for Benner, tying the school record held by Sam Anderson.

Sam Allen belted her second and third homers of the season for the Mustangs while going 2-for-3 with 5 RBI. Other leaders in the Mustangs' 17 hit attack were Stephanie Thompson (3-for-5, 3 double, 2 RBI), Sam Benner (2-for-2, 2 RBI) and Mallory King (2-for-4, RBI), who belted her first home run.

Elise Kowalski won her second game in as many days for the Mustangs (3-4).

The Lions' starting pitcher Jessica Taylor wrenched her knee on a foul ball and had to be carted off the field.

"We'll know after her MRI but we are hoping for the best." said Lions coach John Scotillo.

Viator (1-11) had 17 hits, led by Maggie VanValkenburg (3-for-5), Mary Naughton (3-for-4, 2 doubles), Nicole Ardito (3-for-5, double) and Cece Kaiser (2-for-4), who belted a home run.

Elk Grove 21, Regina 3 (5 inn): The host Grenadiers (2-5) belted 13 hits, led by junior Alexa Fontanetta (3-for-4, 4 RBI, double), freshman A. J. Trausch (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 doubles) and sophomore Lauren Clausen (2-for-4, 3 RBI).

Freshman Olivia Masnica earned the win, striking out five in the first three innings. Masnica also doubled.

Maine West 4, Glenbrook North 3 (9 inn.): Bridget Christiansen's walk-off homer gave host Maine West (6-4, 2-0) and pitcher Jessica Steingard the CSL North victory in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Steingard threw a 7-hitter with 8 strikeouts.

Allison Pearson and Christiansen each had 2 hits to lead the Warriors offense. Abigail Gawlinski and Amanda Bryne doubled for West.

Conant 7, Lake Park 0: Makenna McCarthy (3-for-4, 2 runs) led the offense for Conant (4-2) in the nonconference win. Sydney Correa (double), Morgan Long, Paige Nallen, Alexa Nallen and Hannah Oh also had hits for the visiting Cougars.

Senior Jackie Carlucci threw a 3 hitter with 2 strikeouts to raise her record to 3-1.

Warren 2, Palatine 1: Warren's Caitlyn Britton threw a 3-hitter with 3 strikeouts in the pitcher's duel with sophomore Rhiann Dick (2-1), who threw a 6-hitter with 6 strikeouts).

Grace Huff (1-for-3) doubled in the top of the seventh and scored Palatine's run. Brittany Padden and Kaitlyn Reed also had hits for visiting Palatine (7-1) in the nonconference game.
