Baseball: St. Viator powers up, and past, Prospect

St. Viator's baseball team used homers from Ryan Stejskal, Bryce Hellgeth and Casey Kmet to outslug visiting Prospect 11-8 on Thursday in a nonconference contest.

Kmet finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBI from the leadoff spot, and Hunter Johnson had a big day as well, going 3-for-4 with a double for the Lions (8-3).

Hellgeth had a pair of hits and drove in 4 runs, and Conor Warner singled in addition to drawing 3 walks.

Prospect (5-5) had a good day with the bats as well. The Knights had 10 hits, including a homer from Anthony Composto, a triple from Anthony Catalano and doubles from Nick Ergastolo and Richie Baczek.

Elk Grove 12, Wheeling 7 (9 inn.): Elk Grove produced 5 runs in the top of the ninth inning to complete Tuesday's game, which had been tied 7-7 after 7 innings.

In the ninth, Josh Periaswamy, Ryne Singsank and Justin Post had consecutive singles to start the inning for the Grens. Xander Rojahn drove in 1 run with a fielder's choice, but the big blow was a 3-run triple by Danny Lugo.

Periaswamy pitched 2 scoreless innings to pick up the win for Elk Grove.

Elk Grove (3-4-1, 1-0) and Wheeling also played to a tie on Wednesday; that game is scheduled to be completed Tuesday.

Buffalo Grove 7, Carmel 4: The visiting Bison made good use of 7 hits in winning a nonconference road matchup.

Buffalo Grove (8-3) took advantage of 4 errors, and Matt Brunelli finished 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Mac Camardo also had 2 hits, and Alec Paul drove in a pair of runs.

Dan Pocklington tossed 4⅔ innings and got a victory, and Andy Greenberg pitched 2 scoreless innings and got the save.

Barrington 16, Hoffman Estates 5: The floodgates opened late for the visiting Broncos, who scored 4 runs in the sixth and 5 more in the seventh to pull away and remain unbeaten in the MSL West.

Michael Zavoli led a 15-hit effort for Barrington (6-2-2, 2-0) by going 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and 4 runs scored. Clark Elliott and Jake Horcher also had 3 hits, and Mike Owsley went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Jim Kliver (3-for-4) and Kyle Krogstad (2-for-3) headed up the offensive effort for the Hawks.

Jackson Medina allowed 2 earned runs over 5 innings to pick up the win.

Leyden 5, Addison Trail 3: The visiting Eagles scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to stay ahead of the Blazers and take 2 of 3 from Addison Trail in West Suburban Gold play.

Corey Lavallais, Matt Ozanic and Danny Flores each produced 3 hits for Leyden, and sophomore Jose Solis started and earned the win, with relief support from Ozanic.

Conant 12, West Chicago 5: The host Cougars earned a comeback nonconference win after West Chicago jumped in front 4-3 after scoring 4 runs in the top of the third inning.

Conant (5-5-1) answered with 4 of its own in the bottom half.

Luke Pontikis earned the win, and Cole Kilty tossed 2 scoreless innings to get a save.

Keegan Brandt was a force at the top of the lineup, going 3-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI for the Cougars. Colin Broeker, Mason Sykes and Dave Sapyta had 2 hits apiece, and Sam Ryan tripled and drove in a run.

New Trier 3, Maine West 0: The visiting Warriors (27) were limited to singles from Cory Scholler, Josh Wastyn and Justin Scholler in dropping a Central Suburban divisional crossover.

Notre Dame 12, Rolling Meadows 1 (6): The Mustangs (3-5-1) were limited to single hits by Joe Coen, Nate Pardini, Brandon Janowicz and Emmett Dessimov in a nonconference loss.
