Baseball: Aggressive Wheaton North drops WW South

Wheaton North's baseball team is always eager to play Wheaton Warrenville South.

The last two days, the Falcons added aggressiveness to their eagerness.

Eight players accounted for 16 hits as Wheaton North rolled to Wednesday's 14-5 DuPage Valley Conference victory at WW South, the Falcons' second straight win over the Tigers.

Connor Olson, Jackson Gray and Tyler Woltman snared 8 stolen bases for the Falcons (6-3, 2-0), who jumped on WW South (3-5, 1-3) for 4 runs in the first inning and 3 runs in the second.

That trio accounted for 11 of the team's runs.

"We like to play aggressive, not only on the basepaths but also at the plate," said Olson, who went 3-for-5 with 4 runs scored, 2 RBI and 3 steals. "We knew we had to hunt fastballs the whole game. We really jumped on the ball today. We wanted to keep piling on the runs."

Wheaton North built a 9-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of fourth inning, but WW South didn't fade. Matt Brennan's 2-run double sparked a 4-run bottom of the inning, and the Tigers had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Falcons escaped the jams with two of their four double plays in the game.

"In two days they jumped out right away and took early leads," said WW South coach John Scherrman. "They've taken advantage of every opportunity we've given them. We took advantage of a few of their miscues but obviously not enough."

Wheaton North starting pitcher Jon Vesevick, countered by Illinois-bound Caleb Larson for the Tigers, picked up the win in 4⅓ innings of work. Chris Donahue closed it out.

Woltman, Olson, Gray, Joe Klein, Joey Gail and Sam Hacker had multihit performances for Wheaton North. Matt Scherrman, Pat McGarry and Matt Brodhead each had 2 hits for the Tigers.

"You get a lead, and then you can be aggressive," said Wheaton North coach Dan Schoessling. "We got that 4-run inning right away, and that gives you the ability to be aggressive and not worry about it being a tight ballgame. We had good at-bats all day."
