Baseball: Mundelein recovers, edges Stevenson

Mundelein's baseball team let a big lead disappear, then rallied to beat visiting Stevenson 10-7 in North Suburban Conference action on Tuesday.

The Mustangs improved to 8-2 and 4-0 in the NSC.

Stevenson trailed 6-0 but took a 7-6 lead in the top of the sixth, only to see the Mustangs score four times in the bottom half of the inning.

Mundelein lefty Steven Sanchez allowed just 1 hit over 4 innings but got a no-decision. Rahul Champanen picked up the win, and Ryan Patel earned the save, as he struck out two in the seventh.

Mason Schaller was 2-for-2 with a double and 3 RBI for Mundelein. Jared Dorfman also doubled for the Mustangs.

Stevenson's Ryan McElhinny was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI.

Warren 5, Lake Forest 4: Casey Cobe, Mikey Kocen (2-for-4) and Thomas Kenney (2 RBI) all doubled, as the Blue Devils picked up the North Suburban Conference win.

Bradley Vondruska was 2-for-2 for Warren (7-2, 1-1).

Sophomore Reece Lawler was the winning pitcher, and Matt Langevin notched the save.

Lake Zurich 10, Zion-Benton 0: Noah DeLuga homered, knocked in 3 runs, scored twice and stole a base for the Bears in the North Suburban Conference game.

Libertyville 10, Waukegan 0: Colin Fields (2 innings pitched), Micah Holzworth (1 inning) and Charlie Land (2 innings) threw a combined 1-hitter in the North Suburban Conference game.

Holzworth and Tanner Kelly had doubles for Libertyville, and Tommy Rigali was 2-for-3.

Ben Cornelius allowed 1 hit over 4 innings for the win, striking out seven. Austin Matuszewski had a triple and an RBI.

Grant 8, Antioch 1: Chase Maifield homered, and Nick Malmberg struck out 12 in a complete-game effort, as the Bulldogs won the Northern Lake County Conference game.

Malmberg (3-0) surrendered only 4 hits. Maifield also singled and finished with 2 RBI. Henry Kusiak was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Grant (8-2, 2-0).

Grayslake Central 12, Round Lake 0: Antonio Crews went 2-for-3 with a double and 4 RBI, as the Rams won in Northern Lake County Conference action.

Benton Troehler (1-for-3, 2 RBI) and Tony Neuman (1-for-1, 3 RBI) also doubled for Grayslake Central, and Coby Moe (1-for-3) contributed a pair of RBI. Clay Stoffel earned the win, allowing 2 hits, including a double to Lennard Pureza, over 4 innings.

Lakes 9, Wauconda 5: Jason Volpe was 2-for-2 with 2 doubles and 2 walks, as the Eagles captured the Northern Lake County Conference game.

Matt Grubb went 3-for-4 and knocked in 2 runs for Lakes (8-3, 2-0), which also got 2 hits and 2 RBI from Cameron May. Michael Behrendt and Joe Glassey doubled as well for the Eagles.

Winning pitcher Logan Mueller went 6 innings, allowing just 1 hits and 2 runs, despite walking seven.

Jake Harmon (1-for-2, 2 walks, 3 RBI) doubled for one of the Wauconda's 2 hits.

Grayslake North 11, Johnsburg 1: Nick Lovitsch went 3-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI, as the Knights won the nonconference game in five innings.

Grayslake North (4-5-1) got 2 hits apiece from Nate Marshall and Andrew Keaskowski (RBI), and Jason Donohue contributed a double. Four Knights pitchers, including starter Adam Calhoun (2 innings), allowed a combined 5 hits.

Evanston 3, Vernon Hills 2: All the scoring in the Central Suburban League opener came in the first inning.

Josh Liu was 2-for-4 for Vernon Hills (6-4-1), and Danny Wizceb went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
