Girls soccer: High-powered Deerfield denies Lakes

It's been a work in progress for Lakes' girls soccer team through the first few weeks of the season.

With a young roster, the focus has been on development and learning to complement one another's abilities. Victories have been elusive, but the Eagles have showing a winning approach in fighting through their setbacks.

Lakes stayed close to a powerful offensive team from Deerfield for about a half, but ended up with a 5-1 loss in a nonconference game on Friday afternoon in Deerfield.

"I thought we had a fairly good first half," Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said. "Our team is prone to make turnovers in our own half, and we paid dearly for it. To the credit of Deerfield, they pressured the ball well and anticipated very well. They made the best of their chances. I was happy with the way our team played at times, especially in large stretches of the first half and in the second half.

"Off corner kicks, we seem to be dangerous. And we moved the ball better than previous games. In the end, we don't have the experience to finish, and on defense we're not aware enough of what's around us."

Deerfield (7-1) scored twice in the opening half. Chloe Cappas scored the opening goal in the 12th minute off an end line pass from Samantha Linn.

Linn followed up with a goal of her own, taking the ball off a Lakes defender and putting it into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute.

Lakes (0-5) cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the 30th minute off a set piece. Hannah Morway placed a ball into the penalty area, and Riley Beggs got under it and scored on a header.

Deerfield scored three more times in the second half. Malori Killoren scored two of them for her seventh and eighth goals this season, and Cappas had the other.

The Warriors have already scored 28 goals through 8 games.

"Happy to get the game in, and happy with the result," Deerfield coach Rich Grady said. "We had a better second half. We had to deal with the wind on corner kicks. (Lakes) finished their goal very well on a nice header. I thought we had some nice goals."
