Softball: Oswego East deals young Waubonsie Valley a defeat

A tough opening week ended for the Waubonsie Valley softball team on Friday.

The Warriors went on a 14-day break from game competition after visiting Oswego East prevailed 12-0 in five innings. The defeat dropped Waubonsie to 0-4.

With the majority of the schedule remaining, coach Val Wood sees hope that her team, which started four freshmen and three sophomores against the Wolves, turns lumps being taken now will turn into experience and the squad will progress as the season moves forward.

"They have the drive and determination to get better every day," she said.

The week's agenda was a schedule against top-notch area teams. There were lopsided losses against Plainfield East and Bartlett, but a close battle Thursday at St. Charles North, just a 4-0 defeat. Wood saw a lot of positives in that contest.

"That game showed where we can be, we just couldn't put the bat on the ball," she said.

Michele Calabrese got the Warriors' lone hit against Wolves winning pitcher Grace Klingbeil, a double to right in the first. Calabrese reached base again in the fourth inning on a fielding error.

Freshman Ellie Laub had a stellar defensive game for the Warriors while in center field, reaching for a couple of short flyballs that looked like sure hits and then grabbed a flyball right at the outfield fence.

"I feel I'm doing all right. I was nervous when we started out, but I'm more confident in the outfield and I thought I could catch those (flyballs)," she said.

This week has put a chill on softball games played and Friday was no exception.

"I think the weather can affect you if you don't prepare. I make sure I'm prepared for every play," Laub said.

Waubonsie stayed close to Oswego East (3-0) the first two innings as the Wolves managed just one run on two hits. The victors, though, broke the game open in the third, scoring nine runs on seven hits.

When the Warriors resume competition they will start a five-game homestand that begins with an April 7 doubleheader against Oswego and the DuPage Valley Conference opener April 9 against Lake Park. That will be followed by contests against York and Glenbard North.
