Girls soccer: Grant blanks Harlem

Savannah Barnes' goal in the 26th minute helped lift Grant's girls soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Harlem in nonconference action on Tuesday night.

Lexi Werve earned the clean sheet with 6 saves.

"I really started to see all the pieces come together tonight," Grant coach Olivia Jansen said. "We had a lot of movement up top and some combination play, which we've really been hitting hard at practice. We did a decent job of possessing the ball, as well. Overall it was a great team win, and it's exciting to see us start heading in the right direction."

Grayslake North 2, Elgin 1: Lauren Davis had both goals for the Knights in their nonconference win.

"Tough wind conditions and very cold temperatures certainly had their effect on the game this afternoon," Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "Both teams played better with the wind, though both teams also managed to find their moments against the wind."

Davis opened the scoring in the 29th minute, finishing a shot off an assist from Lauren Hansen. Five minutes later, Davis knocked in a free kick from about 25 yards out.

"With the two-goal lead going into halftime, and facing the wind in the second, we knew we would have to defend well and limit Elgin's chances," DeCaluwe said. "Unfortunately, we found ourselves slightly flat on our feet in the opening minutes of the half and we got beat off a corner kick. Thankfully, with a couple nice saves from junior goalkeeper Emily Dunne and Elgin hitting the crossbar twice, we were able to finish the game with a 2-1 victory."
