Boys volleyball: Vernon Hills outlasts Glenbrook South in season-opening win

Derrick Jones had 11 kills, Drake DeBoer added 10, and Vernon Hills' boys volleyball team opened its season with a 25-23, 20-25, 26-24 win over host Glenbrook South on Tuesday night.

Jonathan Wallach served 4 aces for the Cougars. DeBoer also notched 11 digs, and Sammy Adkisson tallied eight. Wallach and Noah Proft dished out 15 and 11 assists, respectively. Krys Han had 5 kills and 5 blocks, and Joey Reyes slammed 4 kills.

"In a match that was error-filled on both sides, it was nice to see our guys shake off the mistakes, refocus and put up a fight," Vernon Hills coach Chris Curry said. "We were down in every set, but when we served tough, it kept them from ruining us through the middle as much.

"The defense we played was a real highlight," Curry added. "Drake DeBoer, Sammy Adkisson and Ryan Pristas made some digs to keep us in rallies when the block wasn't there and our attacking was soft. Even Derrick Jones stepped up his 'D' in the back row. That's what we're going to need while the offense gets in tune."

Grayslake Central d. Christian Heritage: Isaac Dahlstrom had 4 kills and 8 assists, and the visiting Rams started their season with a 25-19, 25-21 win.

Javier Ortiz added 8 assists and 4 aces for Grayslake Central, Kaleb Patrick had 3 kills, and Jameson Loeffler tallied 12 digs.
