Baseball: Palatine shuts out Crystal Lake South
Starter Jack Hopper and reliever Thomas Soby combined on a 5-hit shutout to help Palatine's baseball team past visiting Crystal Lake South 8-0 on Monday in a nonconference matchup.
The Pirates had plenty of success at the plate as well. Josh Stitt doubled twice and went 3-for-4, while Matthew Helms finished 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI.
Hopper was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and both Jake Andersen and Jack Betz doubled and drove in a run.
T.J. Skelnik had a pair of hits and scored twice as Palatine (4-1) out-hit the Gators 13-5.
Hopper pitched 6 innings and allowed 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and no walks.
Maine West 6, Rolling Meadows 0: Josh Wastyn tossed 6 scoreless innings with 8 strikeouts and also doubled and scored a run as the host Warriors won their season opener in nonconference play.
Prairie Ridge 4, Barrington 3: Johnny Gagne finished 3-for-3 at the plate for the visiting Broncos, but Barrington never had the lead in a nonconference setback.
Barrington (1-1-1) out-hit the Wolves 6-5 but also committed 3 errors.
Schaumburg 7, Elgin 3: The host Saxons out-hit the visiting Maroons 9-4 and scored at least 1 run in every inning from the second through the fifth to earn a nonconference victory.
Albert Kiszka, Nick Calip and Jack Lancaster each went 2-for-4 with a double for Schaumburg (1-0).
Starter Justin Schoefernacker allowed 1 earned run over 4 innings to get the win.
Wheeling 8, Waukegan 1: Nate Dirkes went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Cade Zalewski had a pair of hits to help the visiting Wildcats in nonconference play.
Kevin Pavia drove in 3 runs, and winning pitcher D.J. Godlewski also contributed at the plate by walking and scoring twice.
