Chicago Fire sign veteran forward Gordon

The Chicago Fire on Friday announced the signing of veteran forward Alan Gordon.

Gordon, 36, has been on trial with the Fire for a few weeks.

"Over the course of the year you're going to encounter games where you either need a goal or you're protecting a goal. And I think Alan can fit a role in either of those. When you need a goal, he's very good in the air. He finds good spots in and around the box. He relishes that. And the aerial part of our game has not been great in our three years," Fire general manager/president Nelson Rodriguez said Thursday while waiting for Gordon's signing to become official.

Gordon spent the 2017 season with the Colorado Rapids. He won MLS Cups with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"And I think importantly Alan embraces that he might be a spot starter," Rodriguez said. "This gives us the ability from time to time to play with two forwards. He's game for that. But he also understands that more often than not his will be a bench role, and his understanding of that and experience with that makes it easier."
