Baseball: Glavey pitches Wauconda to season-opening win

Brock Glavey pitched 5 innings of 2-hit ball, and Wauconda's baseball team scored late to defeat visiting Johnsburg 4-0 in its season opener on Friday.

Glavey struck out eight and walked one but left with a no-decision. Jake Harmon threw the final 2 innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out one to earn the win. Harmon also delivered a double and 2 RBI in the Bulldogs' 4-run sixth. Danny Sperling doubled too and knocked in a run. Freshman Camden Janik had a single and an RBI.

Vernon Hills 21, Round Lake 14: On a day that pitchers struggled with command due to the cold, the hitters took advantage.

Vernon Hills (2-1) scored 16 runs in the first inning. Jack Barsczc (2-for-3, double, 2 runs, 4 RBI), Josh Boyer (2-for-2, 2 runs, 4 RBI, stolen base) and Caleb Thomson (2-for-3, triple, 2 runs, 2 RBI) each had multiple hits for the Cougars.

Tony Brown (2-for-3, double, 2 runs, 3 RBI, stolen base), Danny Wizceb (2 runs), Kyle Fasbinder (1-for-1, 2 runs, RBI) and Quinn Geren (run, 2 RBI) each reached base safely in all at-bats. Jordan Krasner (1-for-1) earned his first varsity hit.

Round Lake refused to go away quietly, as the Panthers scored 12 runs in their last at-bat.

Derek Jarrell (1-0) earned the win.

Lakes 7, Richmond-Burton 0: The visiting Eagles won their season opener, allowing just 3 hits.

Mundelein 9, Prospect 5: On Thursday, the host Mustangs won their season opener, giving Randy Lerner his first victory as head coach.

Jeff Morton (3-for-3) and Steven Sanchez (2-for-3) homered for Mundelein, and TJ Yakimisky had a triple. Sophomore righty Jonathon Hanscom earned the win.
