Softball: Scouting Northwest

MID-SUBURBAN EASTBuffalo GroveCoach: Starr Dorsey (third season)

Last year's record: 13-21, 6-10

Graduated players: Katie Fontanetta, Grace Gran, Alyssa DePhillips, Jasmine Avalos

Returning players: Lauren Biersdorf (Sr., OF), Olivia Morini (Sr., CF), Katelyn O'Rourke (Sr., 3B, 1B), Jacqueline Bickhaus (Jr., SS), Kylee Gucwa (Jr., 2B/RF), Sam Hansen (Jr. C/3B), Bailley Williams (Jr., 1B), Hannah Young (Jr., OF), Megan Fontanetta (So., P/2B).

Newcomers: Laura Grabner (Jr., OF), Gianna Lo Verde (Jr., UT/P), Elle Christou (Fr., UT)

Outlook: Pitching and defense will be the key to the Bison's success this season. "We have a lot of experienced leaders both in the infield and outfield which will be key to helping our pitching staff," said Bison coach Star Dorsey. "Our pitchers will need to work hard to get ahead and stay ahead in the counts this season." The Bison graduated two of their top hitters in Katie Fontanetta and Grace Gran. "Offensively, we will need to use our speed and be smart on the base paths to create scoring opportunities for us," Dorsey said. "We will be looking to Olivia Morini and Lauren Beiersdorf to anchor the outfield." Morini returns as the Bison leadoff hitter. "So we will looking for consistency from her offensively," Dorsey added. "In the infield we will be looking to Katelyn O'Rourke and Jacqueline Bickhaus to lead us. Jacqui was plagued with injuries last season so we're looking to keep her healthy and expecting a good season from her."

Elk Grove Coach: Ken Grams (38th season)

Last year's record: 26-10 10-6

Graduated players: Kiley Thomsen, Hayley Itzenthaler, Sabra Morton, Jessica Kearns, Keeley Cronin, Christina DeMaria, Amy Petruszinski, Leilani Rivera, Haley Rathmell

Newcomers: Brook Baldassarre (Jr., SS/P), Lauren Clausen (So., OF/P), Grace Engwall (So., C/1B), Sarah Burkhardt (So., OF), Olivia Masnica (FR. IF/P), A.J. Trausch (FR., OF/1B, Morgan Leach (FR., OF/2B), Grace Majer (FR., OF) Outlook: With the graduation of 9 players, most of whom were multiyear starters, hall of fame coach Ken Grams (909-345-2) has one of his most inexperienced varsity teams in his 38 seasons. Pendowski had a solid rookie season behind the plate as a freshman. The Grens return only three players (Pendowski, Klicka and Fontanetta) with varsity experience and have only 10 varsity innings pitched among roster players. "As a result, we need to learn and grow as we play early season games," Grams said. "The positive side to the situation is that the skill level of the group has been encouraging to see. I believe that the combination of gaining experience at the varsity level and the talent potential shown can lead to some good things."

HerseyCoach: Molly Freeman (11th season)

Last year's record: 24-8, 11-5

Graff is a Wisconsin-Plattville recruit while Luciano will play at Winona State. Tsagalis batted .500 last spring with 12 doubles, 3, homers and 32 runs as the Huskies' leadoff batter. Bailitz went 14-3 on the mound and the right-hander did not lose an MSL game. Graff batted No. 2 in the order last spring and came through by reaching base in more than half of her at-bats. "The strength of our team is always our chemistry and work ethic," said former Fremd standout athlete and Huskies coach Molly Freeman. "Our kids love to work hard together and really enjoy being on the field with their teammates." Hermann and Luboyeski are two more seniors back from last season while there are also eight newcomers on the team. "This team has a lot of new faces and personalities," Freeman added. "We are really excited to see what they are going to do. We expect that our six returning players will set a positive tone and a culture of success. We believe we will be contending for the East Division championship again this season."

ProspectCoach: Krystina Mackowiak (second season)

Placzynski led the Knights with 8 home runs and 30 RBI while collecting 35 hits and batting .393. "We will look for them (Caldrone, Cacini, Orel and Palczynski) and Alex Kanter to get the offense going this season," said Knights coach Krystina Leazer Mackowiak, a former standout pitcher at Elk Grove and Carthage College. Depa will be joining veterans Doherty and Borkowski on the pitching staff. "I am very excited for this season," Leazer said. "We have a special group of seniors that are very committed to the program and ready to finish their career on a strong note. I think this team has a lot of potential to be successful this year."

Rolling MeadowsCoach: Tony Wolanski (15th season)

Last year's record: 9-25, 2-14

Newcomers: Kelsie Campbell (So. OF), Samantha Benner (FR.., OF/3B)

Outlook: Just 2 wins away from 200 for his career, Meadows coach Tony Wolanski welcomes back six starters and 10 varsity players from a year ago. The lineup and overall experience should be a strength. A key addition is slugger Benner, who missed last year's season with an injury. As a freshman, she set single-season school records with 10 homers and 45 RBI while hitting .398. Benner will play first base and lead a very experienced infield. King, who has started since she was a freshman, will play third base with Schmidt handling shortstop. Slowik will start in the outfield or second base while catching duties will belong to Thompson and Allen, who will play in the outfield when they are not catching. Campbell, Cavanaugh and Benner will compete for playing time in the outfield while Angela Vassos will do the same at second base. Sharing the pitching duties will be Kowalski, Herring and Benner. "The expectations for this team are that we get better every day and we learn how to compete," Wolanski said. "We need to do the little things better and we need play as a team. We have to believe in each other and we have to believe we can compete. This team has a chance to be successful, but it all depends on our attitude and our willingness to be team players."

WheelingCoach: Mike Caringella (ninth season)

She will be throwing to McAtee, who also returns behind the plate. Ferraro, Walker and Stanke will roam the outfield while Petzold, Peyton LaCaeyse, Medrano and newcomer Burgess (an all conference bowler) will be penciled in as infielders. Medrano will also be asked to pitch and play all infield positions including catcher. Falkner, Geati and Marquez are back as reserves while newcomers Chavez Glass and Martinez also have roles as backups. "We have a solid group of experienced players to go with some very athletic girls learning the game," Caringella said. " Our goal is to compete in the Mid-Suburban League and continue to improve as the season goes on."

Newcomers: Jessica Bellis (Sr., OF), Samantha Murphy (Jr., OF), Maria Gryzlo (Sr., C), Katherine Stagnito (Jr., IF)

Outlook: As the Barrington program begins its 50th season, the Fillies are looking to build off a Class 4A third-place finish in 2017. The entire pitching staff returns (McMahon, Hope and Meyer) on a Fillies' team that features all seniors and juniors. One of those is senior all-state catcher Jacobsen (. 482, 46 RBI), who threw out 54 percent of runners attempting to steal last spring. The Fillies' solid schedule includes Marist (at Northwestern), St. Charles East, Huntley, Sandburg and the return of the second annual Illinois Coaches Association Greg Easter Invitational Tournament at the Fields of Dreams on May 11 and 12. The 16-team event will host four schools from each of the four IHSA classes, including the Class 1A state champion Goreville. The Fillies currently have five players committed to playing at the next level - Jacobsen (Loyola), Hoppe (Central Florida), Atlas (Rutgers), Meyer (DePaul) and Peterson (Northwestern). Hall of Fame coach Perry Peterson enters his 27th overall season (one at St. Viator) with a 779-184 career record, including an unprecedented 11 MSL conference championships. Among that group are 2017 all-area selections Burchfield (shortstop) and McCarthy (center fielder). Winona State-bound McCarthy (. 585), Burchfield (. 481) and Swed (. 368) put up some strong batting numbers last spring while Correa is a strong four-year varsity player who will fill time behind the plate. Carlucci, who has committed to Eau Claire, will be the Cougars' ace after going 7-1 last season with 58 strikeouts. Nallen has the ability to play anywhere on the field and can also provide some innings on the mound. Flaishaker is a newcomer will also see time in the circle. Long, also a newcomer, has committed to the Milwaukee School of Engineering. "We are looking forward to seeing what these girls can bring to the field once they really get to know each other," said hall of fame coach Smith who guided Conant to three Mid-Suburban League crowns between 2011 to 2014. "We have six returning players who are familiar with what it takes to compete in our conference and win a regional in the post season. Their passion and experience is what will help bring our team together as a complete competitive force."

Georgia Southern recruit Mazur hit .488 last spring with a team-high 8 homers and 40 RBI. D'Ambrosio had the second most RBI with 27 while batting .409. "Mazur will break every major offensive record this year if she only matches her output of last season," Teschner said. "D'Ambrosio continues to forge out her legacy of the best defensive catcher in the history of Fremd." Four-year varsity starters Mazur, D'Ambrosio and Nicole Kehoe will partner two-year starters Grace Stevens, Anna Freveletti and Hannah Ban to ensure a solid season. "The younger players in our program could not have a better group of upper classmen to learn from," Teschner added. "This group is primed and ready for a long state series run behind their senior leaders. We believe that we can compete with anyone in the state and look forward to doing that this year after an incredible off-season of hard work and team building."

Hoffman EstatesCoach: Lindsey Hamma (13th season)

"Mary (Bean) and G (Velazquez) exemplify what it means to be all-in with their focus, effort, and commitment," said Hamma, a former Buffalo Grove and Illinois standout shortstop who also was the guard for Buffalo Grove's 2000 IHSA state championship girls basketball team coached by Tom Dineen. "I look forward to seeing their hard work over the past three years and in the off-season pay off in big ways in their senior season." Hamma returns seven other players from last year's squad. "We have been focusing on the little things surrounding our core values of competing hard, maintaining a positive mentality, and being accountable to the team and ourselves," she said. "Our success will be contingent on the unselfish nature of each athlete embracing her role and putting the team's success ahead of everything else." Hamma believes her sophomore class will play a vital part this season. "Emily, Bri, and Wadas have a desire to win and a passion for the game that clearly rubs off on those around them," Hamm added. "With a year of varsity competition under their belts, I look to them to be defensive anchors and solid contributors in the lineup as well." With Bean from catcher to third base, Hamma will rely on Camiliere and Nieves to support her pitchers (Grossi and Ward) behind the plate. DeAstis returns to first base and will hit the heart of the batting order while Kramp gets the opportunity to contribute at second base and in the outfield. Speedy newcomer Magsino will likely be called upon to lead the outfield alongside Kramp, Ballentine, Wadas and possibly Velazquez.

The 2017 team included two all-area players now playing for Wisconsin-Whitewater in Birkholz (32 RBI) and Jackson (11 extra base hits) who combined for 87 hits last spring. Napier, now studying at Illinois, had been a mainstay as an all-area third baseman, She batted .406 last season with 21 RBI. Encarnacion is playing at Ripon College this season. EAST SUBURBAN CATHOLICSt. ViatorCoach: John Scotillo (fifth season)

Last year's record: 18-15, 4-10

Graduated: Grace Kaiser, Cam VanValkenburg, Adeline Swiderski, Aryanna Ziakas, Cara Hauber, Jenna Breslin

Newcomers: Annie Sweeney (Sr. IF), Mary Kate Cambria (Fr., C/IF), Mary Naughton (Fr., P) Gianna Saverino Fr., IF/P), Marissa Zanon (Fr., C/IF)

Outlook: It's a whole new look for the Lions this season. "Last year, we were loaded with talented seniors," said Lions coach John Scotillo. "I only had to fill out the lineup card and stay out of the way." It paid off with Viator's best season in program history and an Elite Eight finish. Graduated from that team are 134 RBI, 17 home runs and a pitcher (Kaiser) who collected 14 of the team's 18 wins. "We have only four starters returning so we have a number of positions to fill," Scotillo said. "But what is exciting is the fact we have so many young talented versatile players who will now get an opportunity to break through." Two of those are Bielfeldt (who will catch this year) and infielder Kaiser. "Both have dedicated their off season to improving their softball skills and will be in the middle of our lineup," Scotillo said. "Haley (Robinson) is the heart and soul of the team. She has the ability to carry a team on her back and will be in the top of our lineup." Joining her will be VanValkenburg, who will replace her sister Grace in center field and as a captain of the outfielders. Senior captain Taylor will be the Lions No. 1 pitcher. Other pitchers are Bollard, VanValkenburg, Naughton and Saverino. The sophomores are led by last year's 'Rookie of the Year' Ardito. She will also be near the top of the order with Robinson and VanValkenburg. Scheidecker and Davis are two others from last year looking to break into the starting lineup. Freshmen Saverino, Zanon, Naughton and Kate Cambria give the Lions plenty of young talent and diversity which will make it hard to keep them off the field. "And we are pleased to welcome back Anne Sweeney after a two-year absence," Scotillo said. "She is picking up right where she left off and can play the infield and outfield."

CENTRAL SUBURBAN NORTHMaine WestCoach: Jim Dvorak (second season)

Last year's record: 13-14, 7-3

Graduated players: Grace Feldkamp, Anne Lipinski, Nora McDonald, Megan Swanson, Alison Tworek.

Returning players: Katelyn Aragon (Sr), Amanda Byrne (So.), Bridget Christiansen (Sr.), Gabbi Demma (Jr.), Allison Eby (Sr.,), Olivia Feldkamp (Jr.), Allison Pearson (Sr. IF), Jessica Steingard (So.), Brianna Torres (So,).

Newcomers: Angelis Beiza (Fr.), Emily Divelbus (Fr.), Abigail Gawlinski (Fr.)

Outlook: In his second season with the Warriors, coach Jim Dvorak is pleased with the development of the team. "There's a good mix of players from each grade level," said Dvorak, who will once again be assisted by Jerry Stonequist, who was also on the staff of the girls basketball team which took third in the Class 4A state tourney two weeks ago. "The four returning seniors (Pearson, Aragon, Christiansen and Eby) will provide leadership and stability in both the infield and outfield." Pearson was the all-area point guard for the Warriors' girls basketball team. Eby will split time at first, designate hitter pitcher. Christiansen and Aragon return to their outfield roles. "Our returning all-conference battery (sophomores Steingard and Byrne) should be much improved in keeping the scoring by opponents low," Dvorak added. "We kept another battery of youngsters up with us in freshman fireballer Abigail Gawlinski and catcher Angelis Beiza." Demma returns as a third-year starter at second base while the speedy Feldkamp will most likely secure the middle infield. Torres and Divelbus round off the roster as utility players. "We look forward to representing the school and have set high goals," Dvorak said. "There's such a great spirit in the school following the successful winter sports season. We hope to ride that wave."
