Softball: Benner's bat still on fire for Rolling Meadows
Lane 10, Rolling Meadows 7: As a freshman two years ago, Rolling Meadows' Sara Benner introduced herself to the Mid-Suburban League by setting a single-season school record with 10 homers and 45 RBI.
Unfortunately she didn't have an opportunity for an encore as a sophomore, suffering a season-ending broken finger in the fourth game of the season.
But Benner showed Thursday she hasn't lost her touch as a junior.
Benner blasted a pair of homers in the Mustangs' opener, however they weren't enough in a 10-7 loss to visiting Lane Tech.
"Sara is back" said Meadows coach Tony Wolanski, who is just 1 win away from 200 for her career. "But we just made too many mistakes to win the game. We'll go back at again (today)."
The Mustangs are scheduled to host Taft for a 4:45 p.m. nonconference game.
Benner finished the game 2-for-4 with 5 RBI.
Other offensive leaders for the Mustangs were Stephanie Thompson (2-for-4) and Sam Allen (1-for-3, RBI double).
St. Charles North 11, Fremd 9: Fremd dropped its opener in its own quad at Heritage Park in Wheeling.
The Vikings return to action on Saturday with games against New Trier (9 a.m.) and Oak Park-River Forest (3 p.m.).
