Baseball: St. Edward nips ICCP

Danny Camarena walked and scored on an error in the top of the seventh inning Thursday as St. Edward opened its baseball season with a 3-2 win over IC Catholic Prep in a Metro Suburban crossover game.

Ben Boydston, Mike Lopez and Ben Salzmann had the only hits in the game for the Green Wave. Joey Mandarino went the distance on the mound for the win, allowing 4 hits with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Cary-Grove 4, Palatine 2: The Trojans opened their season with a nonconference win as Kyle Ives (2 hits, 2 RBI), Matt Breig (2B, 2 RBI) and Ryan Ignoffo (2B) led the offense. Brandon Menke picked up the win, going 4 innings and allowing 5 hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk. Robert Deischer earned the save going 3 innings and allowing 1 hit with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Conant 4, Dundee-Crown 2: Erik Hedmark had a home run and a double for D-C (0-1) in this nonconference game. Ray Gestrich added a double. Hedmark started and went 4 innings, allowing 1 hit with 10 strikeouts. Nick Gregory suffered the loss for the Chargers.

Elgin Academy 14, Rochelle Zell 0: Jordan Hare (RBI), Colin Konicek (4 RBI), Christian Rodriguez (2 hits, 2 RBI), Murtaza Syed Shah and Reece Zonts (RBI) each had doubles for EA (2-0) in its nonconference win. Jonathan Cruz added 3 hits and 2 RBI and was the winning pitcher, going 3 innings with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks. He combined with Derek Warren (4 Ks) on the five-inning no-hitter.
