Girls soccer: Fitzgerald, Grayslake Central roll in opener

Maura Fitzgerald scored 4 goals, and Grayslake Central's girls soccer team defeated host Johnsburg 9-1 in its season opener on Wednesday.

The Rams led 4-0 at halftime of the nonconference match. Hannah Kolb and Amanda Kocialkowski added 2 goals apiece, and Madeline Mussay also scored.

Grayslake Central keeper Briana Carcamo made 4 saves.

"We played really simple smart soccer and worked hard," Rams coach Daniel De Paz said. "It was a great start to the season."

Wauconda 5, Vernon Hills 0: Megan Sinnott had a hat trick, as the visiting Bulldogs captured the nonconference match.

Annalyse Maze converted a penalty kick and had 2 assists, Morgan Lung also had 2 assists, and freshman Rosalie Wisniewski scored as well. Jill Rejczyk made 3 saves in net for Wauconda (2-0), which led only 1-0 at halftime.

"We really couldn't be prouder of this result," Bulldogs coach Beau Shogren said. "Megan Sinnott was on full display, showcasing her speed and finishing ability. Her hat trick was impressive, but it really was a total-team effort. The midfield and defense played a very disciplined and patient game. Jill Rejczyk came up with an incredible save in the second half on a shot from Alex Ludolph that would have tied it 1-1. There is still plenty to work on, so we need to make sure we don't get too high on this win."

Prairie Ridge 3, Antioch 0: Iowa-bound keeper Monica Wilhelm had 16 saves for the Sequoits, who fell to 0-2 with the nonconference loss.

Grayslake North 2, Crystal Lake South 0: Lauren Davis score twice in the first 10 minutes, Emily Dunne stopped 11 shots, and the Knights won their season opener.

"Great way to start the season from our girls, as our team effort and approach paid off in the end," Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "Everyone did a great job of working hard for each other, and we were able to put in an effort to be proud of, but also build upon."

Davis finished her first two chances. The first goal was assisted by Lauren Hansen in the opening four minutes of the game, "which really allowed us to calm some nerves and give our girls some belief going forward," DeCaluwe said. The second goal came just six minutes later when Davis hit a first touch shot into the top corner of the goal off a cross from Katelyn Dameron.

"Throughout the game, CLS did a good job of creating some dangerous chances," DeCaluwe said. "But Emily Dunne made every save necessary to earn her first clean sheet of the season."
