Team captain Kramp wraps up Aurora career

Patrick Kramp will graduate this May from Aurora University with a degree in business administration.

For the past four years, the onetime all-area pick from Rolling Meadows has also been all business on the basketball floor.

Kramp, who has also minored in sports management, finished his four-year career in Aurora by helping the Spartans to a 20-9 record this winter along with championships in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference regular-season and postseason tourney.

The Spartans advanced to the NCAA tourney in St. Louis where they upset top-seeded Washington University 82-80 in the first round before falling the next day 82-61 to Nebraska Wesleyan.

Kramp played in all 29 games this season, averaging 7 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists while playing 23 minutes per game. He won three varsity letters and was a two-time captain for the Spartans.

For his career. Kramp averaged 7 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist.

• 2016 Daily Herald Northwest all-area team captain Jimmy Sotos (Conant) helped guide Bucknell to the Patriot League title and a berth in the NCAA tournament.

The freshman had 2 points and 4 assists in the Rams' 83-54 win over Colgate in the title game.

Sotos averaged 22 minutes with 4.8 points and 2 assists and was third on the team in steals.

• Lake Forest junior forward Danny Sotos (Conant) scored 13 points with 4 assists and 1 steal in an 87-81 loss to Monmouth College in the semifinals of the Midwest Conference Tournament.

Lake Forest finished the season with 17 victories, the third-highest total in team history, and nine losses.

• Rice junior Connor Cashaw (Stevenson) recorded his team-high sixth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the Owls 79-60 loss on Senior Night to UTSA.

Cashaw became the 36th player in Rice history to score 1,000 career points, while also becoming the 17th player with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

Women's basketball

Saint Louis senior point guard Jackie Kemph (Rolling Meadows) was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship All-Tournament team for her performance in the Billikens' three tournament games. Kemph earned the honor for a second consecutive year.

Kemph averaged 22.0 points, 4.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds in the A-10 Championship. She shot 51.4 percent (19-of-37) from the floor and 86.7 percent (26-of-30) from the free throw line.

She began the tournament by scoring 21 points vs. Massachusetts, including 19 in the second half as Saint Louis overcame a 10-point halftime deficit. She had eight assists and no turnovers while playing all but one minute.

Kemph matched her career high of 28 points in SLU's quarterfinal game vs. Duquesne, a performance that included her season highs for free throws made (13) and attempted (16). She scored 17 points vs. Saint Joseph in the semifinals.

• Cornell College (Iowa) senior Diamond Boyd (Elk Grove) finished her splendid career with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals in a 75-50 first-round loss to traditional power Hope College before nearly 2,000 fans at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Boyd wound up with 93 steals for the season, shattering her own school record.

Cornell finished a banner-filled campaign at 20-6, reaching the 20-win mark for the fourth time in six years.

The Rams spotted Hope a 14-2 lead before they got settled in. Cornell closed the quarter with six unanswered points, highlighted by a 35-foot buzzer-beater from senior Renee Poulos (Hersey).

• Carthage senior Morgan Harris (Hersey) came up just shy of 1,000 career points when she scored 11 in the Lady Reds' 69-54 loss to Wheaton College in the semifinals of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament.

• Alabama-Birmingham junior Deanna Kuzmanic (Wheeling) was named to the All-Conference USA first team for the first time.

She was selected to the team for the second straight season after being named to the All-Freshman team.

Kuzmanic has been one of the Blazers' most consistent players this season and is currently averaging 13.9 points per game. She is second on the team in assists with 108 and leads the team in steals with 41. She also ranks third in the league with a 2.1 assist/turnover ratio.

Her most impressive performance of the season came on Feb. 24 against Louisiana Tech, when the junior guard posted a career-high 35 points to become the 28th member of UAB's 1,000-point club.

Since then, she has continued her strong play and has already moved up to No. 26 on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,047 points, the 10th most by a player through the first three years of their UAB career.

Softball

Ripon freshman Micaela Encarnacion broke a scoreless tie with a one-out double in the second inning of the Red Hawks' 11-2 win over St. Scholastica on the second and final day of the ACM Dome Tournament.

In the Red Hawks' 3-run third inning, Brooke Bauer (Palatine) belted a 2-run triple and scored on a sacrifice fly for the third run.

• Loyola junior Keenan Dolezal (Barrington) was impressive, scattering 5 hits and allowing only one run in a 1-0 loss to Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY at the Eartern Michigan University Madeira Beach Invitational.

Men's volleyball

Augustana freshman Matt Schiferl (Wheeling) leads the Vikings with 178 digs after 18 matches in their inaugural season

Women's lacrosse

Augustana junior Emily Lucnik (Schaumburg) has collected 11 goals and 13 assists who got off to a 3-1 start.

Men's track

Augustana senior Josh Yamamoto (Fremd) was selected as an individual and part of a relay team to the All-Midwest Region team by the United States Track & Field/Cross County Coaches Association.

In order to be named All-Region, an athlete must either be ranked in the top five of an individual event in the region according to final TFRRS data or be part of a top-3 relay team. Yamamoto was selected in the 400 meters and the 4x400 relay.

He ran :49.63 in route to 2nd in the 400 at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin meet on Feb. 24 in Kenosha. He also anchored the 4x400 relay team that recorded their fastest time of the season at the Wartburg Invitational on March 4 with a time of 3:17:42.

Baseball

Augustana sophomore pitcher Chris Refka (Palatine) owns a 2-0 and 2.84 ERA for the Vikings who opened the season by winning six of eight games in Florida. Through eight games, the Vikings are hitting .323 as a team and the pitching staff has compiled an ERA of 2.81.

• Illinois junior Bren Spillane (Wheeling) homered and drove in 3 runs in a 15-4 win at Michigan State as the Illini (7-3) won their sixth straight game.

Men's tennis

Augustana completed its spring trip to Florida on Friday, March 2, winning all three doubles matches and at the top four singles slots to defeat Adrian 7-2.

In No.1 doubles play, senior Eric Pohl (Fremd) and Samuel Totten (from Normal) were 8-1 winners over the Bulldogs' Ronald Ducharme and Duda Nolan. Pohl also posted a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.

Men's hockey

Minnesota State freshmen defenseman Connor Mackey of Tower Lakes was named to the Western College Hockey Association All-Rookie Team. He has played in all 36 games for the Mavericks, registering 4 goals and 8 assists his first season of college hockey.

Prospect baseball clinic

This Sunday, the Prospect Knights Baseball Clinic will be held in the Jean Walker Field House at Prospect High School.

Coaches and players from the 2018 Prospect High School varsity baseball team will conduct a baseball clinic focusing on fielding, pitching and hitting for players ranging from grades first through eighth.

Players will be grouped accordingly. The cost is $30 per attendee.

You can pre register by March 14 via email listing the participants' name, grade and parent contact information (name, phone, email) at phsbaseball2018@gmail.com.

Payment and walk up registration will be accepted at the door the day of the clinic. The Prospect Baseball coaching staff will also conduct a coaches "chalk talk" session for any youth/travel coaches who have participants involved in the clinic.

Practice organization, game strategy, and teaching of fundamentals will be discussed.

Session 1 will be grades first through fourth from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and session 2 will be grades fifth through eighth from noon to 2 p.m.
