Harper's Foy pins down All-American honor

In last weekend's NJCAA wrestling championship held in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the Harper College team finished 15th.

The top finish for the Hawks came at 165 pounds, where freshman Michael Foy placed third. Foy, who'd been seeded at No. 6, suffered his only loss to No. 2 seed Troy Keller of Niagara County, NY, who went on to win the championship.

Foy earned All-American recognition for his performance.

Basketball honors: A pair of Harper hoopsters picked up postseason honors this week.

Sophomores Joe Gatziolis (Elk Grove) and Ashley Shapiro (Elk Grove) both won second team all-Region IV honors. It was the second such recognition for Shapiro, who also earned a second-team selection in the North Central Community College Conference.

Gatziolis averaged 16.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 steals. Shapiro finished at 18 points per game and 10 rebounds per game to with averages of 2 steals and 1.5 blocks.

The Harper women bowed out of the postseason with a 78-36 loss to Joliet Junior College in the Division III, Region IV quarterfinals. In that game, Shapiro and Kaela Drum scored 17 points apiece. Rock Valley won the Region IV title.

The men's team also came up short in the Region IV quarterfinals, dropping an 84-65 decision to Rock Valley. The Golden Eagles advanced to the championship game but fell to Joliet 74-70.
