Prospect produces a 'W' at Hersey
Ashley Adams scored 12 points and teammate Sara Biesterfeldt had 10 to help Prospect's girls basketball team in a 52-39 victory over host Hersey in Mid-Suburban East play on Tuesday.
"This was obviously a big win for us," said Prospect coach Gabrielle Lovin. "Our defense was what made the difference in this game. On the offensive end we were moving the ball well and knocking down shots."
Biesterfeldt and Margherite Pettenuzzo (9 points) both had two 3s in the first half.
Prospect raised its record to 11-8 and 5-2 in the East while Hersey stands at 11-11 and 5-2. They are tied for second behind Rolling Meadows (6-1).
"That lit a fire for us," said Lovin, who cited strong defensive work from Adams and Emily Frasco against Hersey's formidable post players. "Defense in the fourth quarter was crucial for us as we know Hersey is able to come back at any time. This was a great team victory against a well coached and skilled team. I am proud of our girls tonight."
Claire Rogowski had 8 points to lead the way for Hersey, and Maesyn Benjamin finished with 7.
Rolling Meadows 70, Elk Grove 37: Alexa Davis made a pair of 3s, went 7-for-7 at the foul line and finished with a game-high 23 points as the visiting Mustangs (16-7, 6-1) rolled in MSL East play and took over sole possession of first place.
Bridget Rolla and Lily Greifenstein both finished with 12 points for Rolling Meadows.
The top scorer for Elk Grove (11-12, 2-5) was Lily Blomquist with 9 points.
Buffalo Grove 31, Wheeling 28: The host Bison (5-17, 1-6) held the Wildcats to a total of 12 points through the first three quarters, then held on for their first win in MSL East play.
Wheeling (12-10, 2-5) was held to 2 points in both the first and third quarters but made it a game with a fourth-quarter surge that included 7 of Nora Igiehon's game-high 17 points.
The Bison were paced by Kendra Lee, who hit a pair of 3s and finished with 13 points. Jackie Bickaus contributed 9 points for BG.
Conant 47, Schaumburg 38: Ania Baker (12 points) and Lauren Murphy (11 points) helped keep host Conant (8-14, 5-2) tied for first in the MSL West with Palatine. Schaumburg slipped to 3-18 and 2-5.
Barrington 45, Hoffman Estates 30: Taylor Thompson (17 points), Tess Conforti (14) and Tori Meyer (11) led the visiting Fillies (8-13, 4-3), who are tied for second in the MSL West with Fremd.
Shanna Turczynski and Meyer each had 3-poitners for Barrington.
"Tess Conforti had an excellent game," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "She is usually a great defender, but her last couple of game she has also been able to string together some nice offense for us. She works hard and does whatever the team needs on the court. Tori and Taylor continue to pace us, but the others are stepping up and that is great."
Sophomore Nora Thomas led Hoffman Estates (9-15, 1-6) with 8 points.
"I felt like it was a good team win," Barreiro added. "We had a lot of balance offensively which we really wanted, and defensively we really tried to not give (Tayler) Williams any good looks at the hoop."
