Lakes gets the reliable performance it was after

Winning two games in a row had eluded the Lakes boys basketball team all season long.

The Eagles hadn't been able to put back-to-back consistent performances together - but on Friday night, they did it in convincing fashion on the road.

Brad Cherry shot 11-for-12 from the field and finished with 23 points in leading Lakes past host Round Lake 64-38 in Northern Lake County Conference play. Wade Parmly contributed 11 points for the Eagles.

Cherry opened the night with a miss but sure didn't let it bother him. His next 11 shots went through the hoop as the Lakes starters were only needed until about midway through the third quarter.

"I like working on finding my shot," Cherry said. "During the game, I found out what I'm best at and what my teammates can pass to me."

Lakes (7-13, 3-3) has been trying to find a better balance.

"We do have a lot of potential," Cherry added. "We just have to show up every game and do our best. We just have to play unselfish and be one group, which includes bench players coming in and doing their best."

On Friday, it was close only for a few minutes. Round Lake's Lucas Hollingsworth (team-high 20 points) made a layup for a 4-2 lead with 6:20 left in the opening quarter.

But the Eagles went on an 18-4 run for the rest of quarter. Cherry dropped in 9 points and hit a 3 for a 20-8 Eagles lead after the first eight minutes.

Lakes continued hitting shots and extended its lead to 35-14 by the break.

"We had a great win on Tuesday night (over rival Antioch), and I liked the way we came out in this one," Lakes coach Chris Snyder said. "We talked about being ready to play and competing with intensity. Which we did, from the get-go. It was a nice team effort."

Round Lake (0-18, 0-7) was playing without two of its starters. Angelo White missed the game with a shoulder injury and Chris Pierre was out with an ankle injury. Another starter, Nick Pierre, left the game with an injured ankle in the third quarter.

Round Lake was playing its first home game in a month and is looking forward to a stretch of five of their next eight games in their own gym.
