Karg takes charge as Wauconda tops Round Lake

Freshman guard Ella Karg scored a team-best 13 points as Wauconda's girls basketball team earned a 44-21 victory over host Round Lake in Northern Lake County Conference play Friday.

Bulldogs coach Jaime Dennis said Karg's performance was her best of the season.

"Although she led us in points, it was her defensive game I was most pleased with. She made a lot of things happen."

In addition to the scoring, Karg had 5 steals and 3 rebounds.

Allie Tylka finished with 12 points and a team-best 8 rebounds for Wauconda (9-6, 3-2), which was competing in its first post-break game. Tylka also had 3 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals.

Marina Zamudio contributed 6 rebounds and Wauconda got 6 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists from Elise Deaver and 5 points, 4 assists and 4 steals from Po Kimbell.

Round Lake (4-13, 1-5), paced by 9 points on three 3-pointers from junior guard Giselle Raygoza, limited Wauconda to 16 points in the first half.

"It was nice to get back to action after the long break," said Dennis, whose Bulldogs hadn't played since beating Round Lake on Dec. 19 at McHenry as part of the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic. "It took us a while to get the cobwebs out. Round Lake's defense really shut us down in the first half. We turned up the intensity on defense in the second half which sparked our offense."
