Buzzer-beater lifts Evanston past Carmel

Lance Jones' basket at the buzzer lifted Evanston's boys basketball team to a 66-64 win over Carmel Catholic in the fifth-place game of the Centralia Holiday Tournament Saturday night.

DaMone Williams-Gray led Carmel with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 2 of 4 from three-point range. Johnny Roeser had 16 points (8-of-11 shooting) and 7 rebounds, Zion Kilpatrick added 15 points, and freshman Kimahri Wilson finished with 12 points and 7 assists.

Carmel (8-5, 2-2 tourney) trailed 3-25 at halftime.

Evanston was led by Jaheim Holden's 22 points and freshman Blake Peters' 20. Jones finished with 13.

Carmel Catholic 69, Confluence Academy (Mo.) 64: At Centralia, Evan Myers scored a career-high 27 points, and the Corsairs knocked off the third-ranked team in the state of Missouri to advance to Saturday's fifth-place game against Evanston.

Myers shot 8 of 10 from the floor, including 6 of 8 from three-point range, and 5 of 5 from the foul line. The junior guard also dished out 3 assists. Johnny Roeser added 15 points and 8 rebounds for Carmel (8-4, 2-1 tourney). DaMone Williams-Gray and Kimahri Wilson (3 assists, 3 steals) had 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Corsairs saw a 33-25 lead at halftime trimmed to six points (50-44) entering the final quarter but hung on down the stretch.

Mundelein 62, Schurz 44: At DeKalb, Tommy Marcotte and Jeff Bikus each scored 16 points, and the Mustangs won the third-place trophy in the Chuck Dayton Holiday Classic.

Mundelein (9-4, 3-1 tournament) also got a double-double from Andrew Silva (14 points, 12 rebounds), while freshman Conor Enright had 9 points.

Bikus was selected to the all-tournament team.

Grayslake Central 63, Dundee-Crown 51: At Wheeling, Antonio Crews scored 24 points, including three 3-pointers, helping the Rams salvage a win in the 40th annual Hardwood Classic.

Alec Novak added 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Jack Fortmann had 9 points and 4 rebounds for Grayslake Central (6-7, 1-3), which trailed 20-17 after one quarter. The Rams outscored the Chargers 20-7 in the second to lead 37-27 at halftime were up 54-42 into the fourth.

Vernon Hills 49, Wheeling 42: At Wheeling, Luke Perlin had 15 points (two 3-pointers) on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor and 6 rebounds, and the Cougars finished up the Hardwood Classic with their second win in three days.

A.J. Stacy added 13 points (5-of-7 shooting), and Payton Foster had 7 points and 8 rebounds for Vernon Hills (5-9, 2-2 tourney). The Cougars jumped out to a 17-8 lead after one quarter. They led 28-17 at halftime and 37-26 after three.

Stevenson 57, Rockford Auburn 54: At Hinsdale Central, the Patriots used a strong second quarter and held off a late rally to win a consolation game of the Hinsdale Central Holiday Tournament.

Trailing 15-12 after one quarter, Stevenson (8-6, 2-2 tourney) outscored Rockford Auburn (7-7) 16-5 in the second quarter while building a 28-20 lead. The Patriots pushed their lead up to 15 points early in the third quarter, but Rockford Auburn closed the quarter on a 17-8 run to pull to within six points after three.

The Knights pulled even at 45-45 early in the fourth quarter and grabbed a 50-49 lead on a Yahmir Muhammad free throw with four minutes left. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Matthew Ambrose put Stevenson back in front by six with two minutes remaining. Rockford Auburn pulled within one with 26 seconds left, but Jackson Qualley knocked down two free throws to seal the win for the Patriots.

Stevenson shot 66 percent (19 of 29) from the field, including 55 percent (6 of 11) from downtown. Ambrose led the way with 16 points, knocking down four 3e-pointers. Qualley chipped in 12 points and 7 boards, while Nick Bonk totaled 8 points and 7 rebounds.

Muhammad led the Knights with 18 points and 4 assists, while James Neal added 15.

Plainfield North 49, Warren 36: At Pontiac, the Blue Devils dropped the consolation-championship game, spotting Plainfield North a 15-7 lead after one quarter.

Branden Ellis had 15 points to lead Warren (8-6, 2-2 tourney), which trailed 25-20 at halftime and 36-28 after three. Barak Diehl had 10 points, going 4 of 6 from the field, including 2 of 4 from beyond the arc.
