New Trier handles South Elgin

South Elgin's first foray into the 35th Annual Komaromy Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown didn't go exactly as the Storm's girls basketball team had hoped, but there were flashes.

The Storm hung with highly regarded New Trier through most of the first half before the Trevians' relentless defense took over and catapulted them to a 68-40 win.

"At Christmastime you see different teams with different styles and we just told out girls to embrace it and have fun with it," said South Elgin coach Dan Mandernack. "We threw the first punch but eventually (the Trevians') press took over and we had way too many turnovers. Then they started raining 3s and that got contagious."

New Trier (12-1), which will play Hononegah in a 3:30 p.m. quarterfinal on Wednesday, hit 12 of its 23 3-point attempts in the game, led by a 4 of 5 effort from Cate Murdock, who scored 14 points.

South Elgin (4-4) trailed just 20-18 midway through the second quarter but the Trevians went on an 11-2 run to go into the halftime break with a 31-20 lead.

The Trevians then used three straight 3-pointers to start the second half and by the end of the third quarter they had an insurmountable 50-28 lead.

Megan McClure led the Storm with 15 points but no other South Elgin player had more than 6. South Elgin, which plays Hampshire in an 11 a.m. consolation game Wednesday, was 14 of 39 shooting while New Trier hit 25 of its 55 field goal attempts.

Rebecca Goldman led the Trevians with a game-high 16 points.
