St. Charles East dominates at Cary-Grove

It is extremely early in the 2017-2018 wrestling season but St. Charles East coach Jason Potter is happy with his team's performance thus far.

Moving to a perfect 11-0 in dual meets, the Saints picked up 3 impressive wins at Saturday's Cary-Grove Quadrangular.

East defeated Sycamore 49-19, dominated host Cary-Grove 70-6 and ended the day with a 47-19 win over Antioch.

"It was certainly a good day team-wise and we have wrestled well as a team all season long," said Potter. "We had the individual match ups we were looking for and the kids stepped up. It is very early in the season and we have a lot of work to do."

With 14 pins in the quad, 120-pounder Ben Anderson led the way with three of his own.

Anderson made quick work of Antioch's Luke Menzies with a pin in 1:51, pinned Brendon Shuman of Sycamore (3:21) and pinned Noah San Juan of Cary-Grove in a time of 3:17.

"Ben really wrestled well today," said Potter. "He is getting better every match and took advantage of some good matchups."

At 132, Justin Benjamin (3-0) registered 2 pins. Benjamin pinned Elijah Reyes of Antioch in 1:22 and pinned Will Delmer of Sycamore in 1:27.

Niko Derain (152) had 2 pins on the day pinning Colton Berg of Sycamore (3:10) and Brad Peters of Cary-Grove (3:22).

Picking up a pin each for the Saints were Jake Penzato (106), Mark Guerrero (113), Steven Dziadosz (145), Addison Jennings (170), Eric Delmuro (182), Jalen Farmer (220) and Aidan Flynn (285).

Cary-Grove, along with the loss to St. Charles Eastm fell to Antioch 58-18 and dropped a 51-25 decision to Sycamore.

The Trojans, who had to forfeit five weight classes, received a stellar effort from 220-pounder Caden Koeppel (10-3) who picked up 3 pins. The Trojan senior pinned Alex Schneider of Antioch in 4:50, Matt Hunter of Sycamore in 58 seconds and Justin Jett of St. Charles East in 3:01.

"I have had a tough week so I came into today with a fresh mindset," said Koeppel. "I tried to wrestle loose. It was a good bounce back day."

Cary-Grove 132-pounder Adam Pinter picked up 2 pins on the day pinning Reyes of Antioch in 5:20 and Delmer of Sycamore in a time of 2:38.

Peters (152) and Isaac Rands (160) picked up wins by decision for the Trojans.

Antioch. 2-1 on the day, defeated Cary-Grove and Sycamore (41-30) and lost to St. Charles East.

The Sequoits got a pin each from Alex Barbarise (113), Menzies (120), Danny McPherson (126), Reyes (132), Mikey Volkmar (160) and Garcia (170).
