York shows it can win on the road at Hinsdale Central

After six home games to open the girls basketball season, York finally played away from its own gym.

The result was yet another win, this one 47-26 in a West Suburban Silver game at Hinsdale Central on Tuesday night.

"I think it's really good because at home we have that boost of some fans and our parents, obviously, all out there cheering us on," York senior guard Madison Park said. "And we're obviously comfortable on our home court. To get our first win on the road is a big confidence-booster. Like if we can do it here, we can do it anywhere."

"I was anxious to see how we played on the road here," York first-year coach Brandon Collings added. "Just it's a different environment. You get used to being at home. But we came out, did well right away. Took a lead, which was great."

The Dukes (6-1, 3-0) took control from the start, scoring the game's first 7 points and leading 15-2 at the end of the first quarter.

"Our starts are usually either hot or not, and I think our start tonight was really good and really strong and I thought our press finally came together and we got that good rotation," Park said.

By halftime the Dukes led 26-8.

"Defensively, I think they missed some easy buckets in the first half," said Collings, who was not impressed with his team's rebounding. "I think it was both ways. We said, hey, if we would have hit our layups in the first half, we could have been up by 30, but if they would have hit their putbacks, it would have been a closer game also."

Shooting was a problem for the Red Devils (2-6, 0-3). They were 0 of 10 in the first quarter, 5 of 35 through three before both benches emptied in the fourth.

"We've had a hard time knocking down some easy looks," Red Devils coach Karen Persinger said. "I felt like we started the game pretty even. We got good looks at the basket. I was pleased with the shot opportunities that we had. They just didn't go down. I told the girls, this isn't baseball. We're not going to pitch a no-hitter. We've got to score."

Freshman guard Molly Sheehan led the Red Devils with 11 points.

Senior guard Danielle Dennis led the Dukes with 11 points, and senior wing Caylin Rufus just missed a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Junior guard Matty Stark also scored 10 points.

"We didn't execute offensively like we have," Collings said. "We didn't knock down layups. The girls were missing layups that they haven't been missing all year. ... Overall not our best game by far, but still a 21-point win, we'll take it to go 3-0 in conference."
