Lincoln-Way East pulls away late against Loyola
Lincoln-Way East scored 10 points over the final 5:11 to earn a 23-14 victory over Loyola in the Class 8A high school football state championship game Saturday evening at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.
Dominic Dzioban booted a 32-yard field goal to give Lincoln-Way East a 16-14 lead with 5:11 left.
The Griffins (14-0) held Loyola to a single first down on the next drive. And on Lincoln-Way East's next play from scrimmage, A.J. Henning got free up the middle for a 42-yard touchdown and a two-score advantage for the Griffins.
Henning finished with 154 yards rushing and 2 TDs on 17 carries.
Loyola did most of its damage through the air. Quarterback Quinn Boyle finished 27-for-44 passing for 315 yards with 2 TDs and 1 interception for coach John Holecek's team.
It's the second title for coach Rob Zvonar at L-Way East; the first came in 2005.
Class 5A - Phillips 33, Dunlap 7: Phillips cemented its reputation as a Chicago Public League football power by winning its second state title in the last three years.
The Wildcats wrapped up a 14-0 season by allowing minus-3 yards rushing to Dunlap (13-1), which completed its deepest run yet in the football postseason.
Craig Elmore ran 18 times for 76 yards and 3 touchdowns for Phillips, and quarterback J'Bore Gibbs completed 11 of 23 passes for 130 yards with 1 TD and 1 interception.
Anthony Davis got Phillips' scoring started with a 64-yard TD run in the first quarter.
