Hoffman Estates starts with victory over Hersey

Hoffman Estates got 19 points apiece from Marquez Woodard and James Allen in earning a 62-55 victory over Hersey in first-round tournament action at Glenbrook North on Monday.

Adrian Punzalan also got into double-figure scoring with 10 for the Hawks.

Hersey's top producer was junior forward Ryan Verhulst (15 points, four 3s), followed by senior guard Jake Stearns (11 points, two 3s) and Dave Belford (8 points, two 3s).

Wheeling 53, Maine East 39: Phil Bucko scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Wildcats to a decisive win in tournament play at Ridgewood.

Isaac Vega made three 3s and finished with 9 points for Wheeling, and Jeremy Kim finished with 8 points.

Barrington 67, Huntley 34: The Broncos got off to a terrific start with a decisive victory over the Red Raiders in Crystal Lake Central tournament play.

Senior guard Anthony Spann and senior forward Jack Reinhard led the way for Barrington with 14 points apiece, and junior guard Jason Boock finished with 10.

Fremd 43, Deerfield 40: Senior guard Luke Seidel scored a team-best 13 points and junior guard Bryce Hopkins had 12 as the Vikings started with a triumph in first-round play at Mundelein.

Fremd, which got 7 points from Ryan Martin, shot 12-for-15 from the foul line as a team.
