Girls basketball: Highland Park nips Mundelein
Addie Budnik hit the first of 2 free throws with 16 seconds left, lifting Highland Park to a 44-43 win over Mundelein in opening-round play of Mundelein's girls basketball Thanksgiving tournament Monday night.
Budnik, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, led the Giants with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Kirby Bartelstein added 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, for Highland Park (1-0), which trailed 41-37 after a pair of free throws by Mundelein sophomore Morgan Frank with 3:18 left.
Frank, whose 3-pointer beat the third-quarter buzzer to put her team up 32-28, had 11 points and 18 rebounds. Mundelein (0-1) also got 14 points from senior guard Hannah Buscher and 10 points from senior guard Kelsy Austwick. Sophomore forward Kendall Klatt had 8 points and 16 rebounds. Buscher and Austwick each made two 3-pointers.
The Mustangs called a timeout with 10 seconds left after Budnik's first free throw snapped a 43-43 tie, but they could not get a shot off as time expired.
Mundelein first-year coach Greg Dorgan was encouraged by his team's effort.
"Those are the types of games you want to play in all season, where you're scheming down the stretch and valuing the basketball every possession of the game," said Dorgan, who coached and taught at Wauconda the last 10 years.
Dorgan wasn't surprised by the effort his Mustangs got on the glass from the 5-11 Frank and the 5-7 Klatt.
"We know that they're going to give us that type of production," he said.
Highland Park also got 9 points from junior guard Sydney Ignoffo.
Glenbrook South 39, Carmel 27: At Mundelein, senior guard Lizzy Shaw scored a game-high 10 points to lead the Titans in the tournament opener.
Glenbrook South junior guard Makayla Stadler scored 7 of her 9 points in the third quarter after picking up 3 fouls in the opening quarter. The Titans trailed 10-6 after one quarter but went into halftime up 21-13, as they outscored the Corsairs 15-3, getting 3-pointers from Kristin Ralston and Libbie Vanderveen.
Carmel was led by sophomores Katie Lach and Ranya Jamison with 8 and 7 points, respectively.
"I thought we played hard," said Ben Berg, who was coaching the Corsairs for the first time since the end of the 2009-10 season. Kelly Perz coached the team the last seven years. "Glenbrook South knows how to win and has a lot of tough kids. We got out-toughed a little bit tonight, but I'm proud of our girls. I thought they fought back."
Sycamore 48, Antioch 28: At Vernon Hills, a young and inexperienced Antioch team was hampered by 38 turnovers in its season opener.
Piper Foote led the Sequoits with 9 points and 3 steals.
Olivia Ori had 6 points and 4 steals.
Vernon Hills 60, Elk Grove 53: At Vernon Hills, the tournament hosts got by Elk Grove on the strength of 20 points and 10 rebounds by junior forward Kayla Caudle.
She also had 4 assists and 4 steals.
Cougars freshman Daniella Jarrell added 12 points and 6 rebounds, while Piper Bedell had 6 points and 8 rebounds.
Cary-Grove 47, Lakes 22: At Cary-Grove, as part of the Lake Zurich Turkey Thriller tournament, junior center Paule Ceneac led Lakes with 10 points.
