Girls volleyball: Harvest Christian, Aurora Christian nab 2A sectional titles

The girls volleyball teams from Harvest Christian and Aurora Christian are a win away from facing each other in a Class 2A state semifinal.

The Lions and Eagles won their respective sectional championships Wednesday night, a seventh straight sectional title for Harvest but a first for Aurora Christian.

Harvest Christian won the Chicago Christ the King sectional crown, defeating Walther Christian 25-15, 25-10. The Lions will come home to Elgin for the 7 p.m. Friday supersectional on their home floor against Galena. Harvest has never won a supersectional match.

Amanda Cassidy (5 kills, 5 digs, 2 aces), Zoe Pawelek (6 kills, 4 digs, 3 aces), Kaitlyn Murray (18 assists, 5 digs), Madison Pfister (3 kills, 3 blocks) and Hannah Griffith (3 kills, 2 blocks) paced the Lions.

Meanwhile, Aurora Christian outlasted host Chicago Christian 22-25, 25-19, 25-20 for Wednesday's sectional title.

Cate Long led Aurora Christian with 20 kills and 9 digs. Kaitlyn Beebe had 13 kills, Jenna Long 38 assists and Emily Ward 11 digs and 4 aces.

The Eagles will travel to Seneca to face Champaign St. Thomas More in Friday's supersectional.

If Harvest and AC each win the Northeastern Athletic Conference rivals would meet each other at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 at Redbird Arena in Normal in a state semifinal match.
