Girls tennis: St. Charles North, West Aurora doubles teams win twice at state

The St. Charles North doubles team of Shelby Thomas and Emiara Saini along with West Aurora's doubles tandem of Elizabeth Stefancic and Maria Goheen survived their first two matches in the championship bracket of the Class 2A IHSA state tennis tournament Thursday.

The Upstate Eight Conference rivals could meet in a championship quarterfinal if each team wins its respective third round match on Friday morning.

Thomas-Saini defeated Cary-Grove's Elizabeth Barrett-Katie Sowa 6-1, 6-2 in their first match Thursday then downed Elyse Mansfield-Lauren Parker of Homewood-Flossmoor 6-1, 6-3 in the second round.

They will meet Slywia Mikos-Aimee Puz of Hinsdale South in Friday's third round at Wheeling High School.

West Aurora's Stefancic-Goheen opened play Thursday with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Salma Alsikafi-Nika Belova of Lake Forest before beating Olivia Kraft-Kayva Sudhir of Normal 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.

The Blackhawks' duo will also take to the Wheeling courts Friday morning to face Catherine O'Regan-Samantha Frishman of Glenbrook North in the second round.

Elsewhere in doubles play, Geneva's Grace Hahn-Jaden Ciesielski won their first round match 6-2, 6-3 over Gabby Perillo-Natalie Barth of Lockport before falling to Amia Ross-Ali Benedetto of New Trier 6-1, 6-0 in the second round. Hahn-Ciesielski then came back in the consolation bracket to defeat Madison Vail-Grace Walls of Normal 3-6, 7-5, 11-9 to stay alive in the back draw. The Vikings' duo will face Katie Materick-Nastazja Cancellaro of Lyons on Friday at Schaumburg High School.

The Jacobs team of Hailey Steinkamp-Kylie Skepnek is also still alive. After losing their first round match 6-4, 6-1 to Naperville North's Tiffany Zhang-Kavya Rachapallo, the Golden Eagles' team came back to win twice in the consolation bracket, first defeating Sarah Trusk-Shreya Sharma of Plainfield North 6-1, 6-2 then downing Mansfield-Parker of H-F 6-0, 6-3.

Steinkamp-Skepnek will take on Miley Bruner-Kate Macaluso of O'Fallon in the third round of the consolation bracket.

The Huntley teams of Allison Simons-Merritt Whiteside and Alex Landman-Kayley Roche were eliminated from play with losses in their first two matches as were Barrett-Sowa of Cary-Grove.

In Class 2A singles play, Elgin's Marta Krakowski is the only Fox Valley area competitor still alive and she'll have to fight through the back draw after losing her second round match on Thursday.

Krakowski opened play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Caroline Park of Belvidere North before losing to St. Ignatius' Tyra Richardson 6-3, 6-2. Krakowski then came back to defeat Janet Buenrostro of Proviso East 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the third round of the consolation bracket where she will face Isabel Alviar of Mundelein on Friday.

Bethany Marhsall of Cary-Grove, Alaina Kanthaphixay of Streamwood, Caroline Lahey of Geneva and Lindsay Cunningham of Jacobs were all eliminated with two losses Thursday. Kanthaphixay and Cunningham did win a match in the consolation bracket before being eliminated.

In the Clas 1A tournament, Kaneland's singles players — Piper Schrepferman and Madelyn Jurasek each won their first two matches Thursday, giving the Knights 8 of their 9 team points which has them tied for third place in the team standings.

Schrepferman opened the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lily Schoeck of Rock Island Alleman then defeated Taylor Fleming of Highland 6-1, 6-2. She will play Nicole Roc of Northside Prep in the third round.

Jurasek defeated Sophie DiBiase of Carbondale 6-3, 6-2 in the first round then handled Cara Savin of North Shore Country Day 6-3, 6-1 in the second round. She will face Sarah Hackman of Wauconda in Friday's third round.

In Class 1A doubles, the Kaneland teams of Anna Carlson-Erin McMullen and Haley Plach-Ingrid Napiorkowski were each eliminated Thursday.
