Bears like what they're getting from versatile linebacker Jones

Versatile linebacker Christian Jones made his 22nd career start for the Chicago Bears in Week 5, leading the team with 9 tackles.

Jones was filling in at inside linebacker because Danny Trevathan was serving a one-game suspension and Jerrell Freeman (injured reserve) and Nick Kwiatkoski were out with chest injuries.

Jones, who has played inside and outside linebacker, was undrafted out of Florida State in 2014, but he played in all 16 games as a rookie with five starts and was second on the team with 98 tackles. In 2015 he also had 98 tackles, finishing second on the team as he started 13 games.

"He's getting comfortable there (inside)," defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. "In '15, he was full time in there. Last year he was back and forth, and now he's full time again (inside).

"He's getting better. He had a lot of nice plays (Monday) night. He wasn't perfect by any means, but I think he's growing and improving."

Trevathan is back this week, but John Timu (knee/ankle), who started next to Jones in Week 5, is out.

Back in the day:

Once a quarterback, always a quarterback, at least for Bears tight end Zach Miller.

After four years as a quarterback at Nebraska-Omaha, Miller first played tight end in a postseason all-star game after his senior season but showed enough promise for the Jacksonville Jaguars to use a sixth-round pick on him in 2009.

His QB skills came in handy on the Bears' tricky 2-point conversion Monday night.

Quarterback Mitch Trubisky handed off to Jordan Howard, who handed to Miller going the opposite way, who then pitched out to Trubisky, who ran it in for the 2 points.

Did Trubisky know that Miller was a quarterback in college?

"I did," Trubisky said, smirking. "He tells me all the time. He says, 'I could spin that. I could make that throw.' "

Sack man:

Leonard Floyd's sack of Sam Bradford for a safety Monday was his second in as many seasons.

It tied Floyd for first among active NFL players with 2 safeties, joining the Jacksonville Jaguars' Calais Campbell and Washington's Junior Galette. Floyd also has the most career safeties since entering the league in 2016. After getting 2 sacks vs. the Vikings, Floyd has 3, trailing team leader Akiem Hicks, who has 4.

Ready for prime time:

Mitch Trubisky was the first rookie quarterback selected in the first round to make his first NFL start on Monday Night Football in 31 years, and the third of all time. He joins Wheaton native Chuck Long (Dec. 15, 1986) of the Detroit Lions, and John Reaves (Oct. 2, 1972) of the Philadelphia Eagles on that list.
