Boys golf: Stevenson's fourth after Day 1 of state tourney

Jackson Bussell fired a 2-over-par 73, and three of his teammates also broke 80, as Stevenson's boys golf team shot a 307, good for fourth place after Day 1 of the Class 3A state tournament at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington on Friday.

Hinsdale Central (295) sits in first place heading into Saturday's final round. Led by senior Scott Frevert's 74, Lake Forest had a 304 and is in third place behind Loyola (302). Stevenson is one stroke ahead of Geneva and Highland Park (308 each).

Besides the junior Bussell, who's tied for seventh place, Stevenson also counted the rounds of freshman Conan Pan (77, tied for 33rd), senior Matthew Schawel (78, tied for 38th) and junior Alexander Kim (79, tied for 44th). Junior Mark Noonan and senior Brett Ekenberg had an 81 and 87, respectively, for the Patriots.

Lake Forest's other scores included 76s from junior Danny Fisher and senior Connor Polender and senior Michael Seaman's 78.

Carmel Catholic junior Evan Myers shot a 75 and is tied for 22nd, while his junior teammate Michael Pelfresne opened with an 83. Mundelein junior Josh Peterson and senior Christian Loar shot an 84 and 85, respectively.

Class 2A

At Weibring Golf Club on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal, St. Viator opened with a Class 2A-best 301, four strokes better than runner-up Normal U-High (305). Vernon Hills struggled to a 332 and is tied for 11th among the 12 teams.

St. Viator junior Nolan Doherty fired an even-par 71 and is tied for fourth. The Lions also received a 74 from junior E.J. Reisinger and matching 78s from junior Timmy Crawford and senior Ryan Flynn.

Brian Favia, competing at state for the fourth year in a row, shot a 78 (tied for 29th) to pace Vernon Hills. The Cougars also counted junior Brendan Wise's 81, junior Joey Levitan's 86 and junior Sujay Voleti's 87.

Grayslake Central senior Michael Sisk is tied for ninth after shooting a 72, which included 3 birdies and 4 bogeys. His teammate Tyler Hanson carded an 86.
