Barrington goes to 8-0

Friday night at Schaumburg, Barrington quarterback Ray Niro proved to be opportunistic. Again.

Niro scored 4 touchdowns on runs of 37, 15, 5, and 8 yards, rushing 19 times for 243 yards.

Niro also tossed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Jake Parsons while completing 7 of 11 passes for 63 yards as he added to his remarkably productive season.

"I don't know if there is a better quarterback in this area better than Niro," said Schaumburg coach Mark Stilling.

"What you see on the field is what you see in practice," said Barrington coach Joe Sanchez. "He just prepares for a game so well. He works his tail off."

The Broncos walked away with a hard fought 48-20 win after leading 27-20 at halftime.

The win gives Barrington an 8-0 mark and a 4-0 record in the Mid-Suburban West, with just Conant standing in the way of an unblemished regular season next Friday night.

"I trust my offensive line," said Niro. "I would trust them with my life. When we practice, we focus on the moment and one play at a time. Schaumburg gave us a hard time. We knew they would be tough."

Niro cited Brad Warman, Jorge Gavina, Geoff Frenk, Brendan Carpizo, and Alec Meister for their work up front.

"We watch the films and watch for the defensive team's techniques," Niro said. "We make our adjustments like we did tonight."

The Saxons, who close out the regular season at Fremd next Friday, need a Week 9 win to be eligible for the state playoffs.

"We're going to have to play with our best effort to beat them," said Stilling. "We saw tonight that you can't make mistakes against a team and win. There not 8-0 for nothing."

After Barrington scored on Parsons' touchdown reception to start the game, the Saxons (4-4, 1-3) roared back.

It took just five plays before quarterback Marcus Ross connected with Deontae Arnold for a 26-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7 with 6:59 left in the first quarter.

John Lancaster's fumble recovery set up Ross' 6-yard touchdown pass to Heze Trotter for a 13-7 Saxon lead with 4:29 left in the initial quarter.

Niro began to work his magic, producing a 37-yard run to ties the score at 13 with :54 left.

Grant Leichter's interception on the Saxons 8 set up the first of Michael Curran's 2 touchdowns on a 14-yard run. The point after by William Hutchinson gave the Broncos a 20-13 lead just into the second quarter.

Ross countered with a 2 yard run to tie the score at 20 with 7:48 left before halftime.

Niro gave Barrington the lead for good on a 15 yard run with 1:34 left in the second quarter.

Curran (14 carries, 101 yards) broke up the middle for a 24-yard touchdown with 8:25 left in the third quarter.

Niro scored 1 touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters.

Defensive end Alec Gibas who had 3 tackles for losses, commended Barrington's "Dirty Offense" scout team.

"They run the other team's offense in practice, and they do a great job preparing us, " said Gibas. "We knew Schaumburg was a great team. We had to battle them the whole game. We really didn't do anything different in the second half than we did in the first. We just played better."

Barrington powered for 423 yards of offense to Schaumburg's 311. The Saxons, though, were held to just 119 yards in the second half.
