Girls volleyball: Palatine finishes against Schaumburg

Going into its match with MSL West co-leader Schaumburg, Palatine's four losses in conference play were all by 2 points in the third set.

Coach Dan Gavin has been saying all season his team just has to learn how to finish.

The host Pirates not only finished on Thursday night, they closed it out in two sets.

Palatine raised it record to 14-8 and 4-4 with a 25-22, 25-19 triumph over the visiting Saxons (13-8, 6-2), who trail Fremd (15-6, 7-1) by 1 match with two to go.

Fremd d. Hoffman Estates: Defending MSL West champ Fremd (15-6,7-1) took a one-match lead in the West with a 25-5, 25-9 win behind top attackers Heidi Sayre (8 kills), Peyton Hooker (3) and Jess Rizzo (3).

Sarah Straup handed out 12 assists and Lydia Vanderark had 5. Top blockers were Jess Mazur 3, Grace Grubb (2) and Hooker (2).

Host Hoffman Estates (0-14, 0-8) was led on attack by Janiah Fowler and Patricia Wadas with 2 kills apiece. Kathleen Geuco had 2 assists while Ashley Poland had 15 digs and 1 ace.

Wheeling d. Rolling Meadows: The host Wildcats claimed the Golden Coconut Trophy as part of a Hawaiian luau-themed night which saw Wheeling (14-12, 3-5) rally for a 24-26, 25-19, 25-22 MSL East win.

Kamila Staniszewski (13 kills), Rugile Jaciunas (5 kills) and Ellie Welter (6 kills) led the Wildcats' offense set by Jessica Janowski (25 assists), who also served 3 aces.

Jazmyn Veloso and Staniszewski each had 15 digs while Jaciunas and Nosa Igiehon had 4 blocks apiece.

Rolling Meadows (13-14, 5-3) was led on attack by Eleanor Errico (13 kills), Elise Kowalski (8 kills), Leticia Avellaneda (4 kills) and Natalie Klancnik (3 kills).

Klancnik (19 assists) and Mallory King (7 assists) set the attack while Macie Robinson led with 17 digs and Kowalski had 12. Avellaneda posted 3 blocks.

Buffalo Grove d. Elk Grove: Visiting Buffalo Grove raised its record to 10-8 and 4-4 in the MSL East with a 25-10, 25-12 triumph.

Claire Ferriss (10 kills), Lauren Horvath (8 kills) and Mary Nowlan (4 kills) led the Bison attack which was set by Maggie Streckert (22 assists).

Ferriss led with 7 digs followed by Riley Cross (6). Nowlan added 3 blocks.

Elk Grove (2-19, 0-7) was led by Rachel Kandefer (9 kills, 2 blocks).

Maine West d. Vernon Hills: Maine West (14-8, 5-2) won the CSL North match 25-14, 25-10 as Jessica Riedl paced the attack with 11 kills.

Other key performers were Christy Kolosvary (10 digs), Ally Block (10 assists), Reilly Olson (5 kills) and Amanda Grzebien (4 kills, 3 aces)

Lane Tech d. Leyden: Lane Tech won the nonconference match 25-21, 25-18 as the Eagles were led by junior outside hitter Destiny Corral (8 kills) and junior libero Bea Verin (13 kills).

Harper d. Triton: Harper College earned a 25-10, 25-8, 25-23 win as Ellie Burzlaff (14 kills), Lydia Schiller (5), Carley Chiodo (4) and Angelina Nichols (4) were top attackers for the Hawks.

Emily Huprich handed out 23 assist while Ariana Chelini and Emily Huprich each had 12 digs.

Huprich also served 4 aces and Chelini had 2
