Girls volleyball: Hersey rallies past Buffalo Grove

Hersey began its quest for a 16th straight Mid-Suburban League East girls volleyball title on Thursday night by defeating visiting Buffalo Grove 18-25, 25-15, 25-22 at the Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

Coach Nancy Lill's Huskies fought back in the final two sets to hike their record to 7-3 and 1-0.

Junior Kati Kaburov led the Huskies with 13 kills, 14 digs, 1 block and 1 ace.

Other top performers were Karolina Wojdacz (6 kills, 10 digs), Maddie Mullin (15 digs 3 assists), Kaiya Eshoo (3 kills, 9 assists, 1 ace, 6 digs), Alessia Olhava (5 kills,12 assists,10 digs), Juliette Vandenherik (3 kills, 2 blocks), Janine Boyan 2 kills 3 blocks) and Kate Lubbe (4 blocks),

Among the leaders for Buffalo Grove (4-6, 0-1) were Claire Ferriss (11 kills, 2 aces), Lauren Horvath (8 kills), Shannon Coglianese (8 kills), Abby Kim (4 kills, 2 aces), Maggie Streckert (28 assist) and Nina Masciopinto (17 digs).

Wheeling d. Prospect: Host Wheeling (6-7, 1-0) won its MSL East opener 25-27, 25-7, 25-13. Among the leaders for the Wildcats were Grace Zambrano (24 assists, 5 kills, 5 aces), Nicole Nguyen (6 kills, 6 digs), Ally Ferraro (14 digs), Kamila Staniszewski (21 digs, 3 kills) and Ellie Welter (11 digs, 3 kills).

Prospect (3-2, 0-1) was led by Grace Cacini (9 kills), Emma Cogan (6), Elizabeth Abraham (5) and Annie Wiley (3). Sloane Petlak and Sarah Skaggs each had a pair of blocks while Skaggs handed out 18 assists.

Cogan led with 17 digs, followed by Mia Farraday (15) and Skaggs (10).

Palatine d. Conant: The visiting Pirates (5-3, 1-0) kicked off play in the MSL West with a 25-17, 30-28 triumph as Emily Campe (8 kills), Haley Holz (7) and Sydney Wiebe (3) led the attack set by Allison Drake (22 assists). Jillian Smith paced the Pirates' back row with 16 digs. Drake and Lauren Henning each served 4 aces.

Yuri Hara paced the attack for Conant (4-5, 0-1) with 7 kills while setter Fiona Fennelly handed out 8 assists and teammate Bowman Emma served 4 aces.

Rolling Meadows d. Elk Grove: First-year Meadows coach Katie Stensland earned her first win in the MSL East as the Mustangs (5-5, 1-0) won their opener 25-17, 25-13. Elise Kowalski and Eleanor Errico (4 aces) led the attack with 6 kills apiece while Leticia Avellaneda added 3. Natalie Klancnik collected 13 assists. Sophia Salemi had 6 digs while Klancnik and Kowalski picked up 4 each.

Leaders for Elk Grove (0-7, 0-1) were Kaitlyn Ingebrigtsen (2 blocks), Rachel Kandefer (5 kills) Megan Murray (6 digs) and Gaby Perez 2 aces). Molly Wilson had 5 assists and Lauren Bongiovanni contributed 2.

Schaumburg d. Hoffman: Schaumburg won its MSL West opener 25-16, 25-16 over visiting Hoffman Estates (1-7, 0-1).

Leyden d. Ridgewood: Host Leyden earned the 25-13, 25-19 as senior outside hitter Destiny Corral (6 kills, 1 ace), junior outside hitter Jailynn Bravo (5 kills) and junior setter Jocelyn Escamilla (16 assists) helped lead the way.
