"I think over the last two weeks we have been playing some of our best soccer," Vernon Hills coach Mike McCaulou said. "This is always the goal - to be playing well heading into the postseason. We are a completely different team than when we started in August. I thought we played a fantastic first half of soccer and, defensively, we were well organized and kept great shape. Our goalkeeper made 3 or 4 huge saves that really gave us momentum."

Lakes 1, Round Lake 0: Shane McKeever scored at the 15-minute mark, and Danny Wieczorek made 10 saves for his ninth shutout of the season, as the visiting Eagles won in Northern Lake County Conference action.

McKeever headed in a ball from a long throw-in by Jeff Milostan.

"As typical of a Round Lake/Lakes soccer game, Round Lake had the majority of the possession and opportunities with Lakes defending and counterpunching," coach Kevin Kullby said after his Eagles improved to 12-5 and 6-1 in the NLCC.

Despite his team being in a defensive shell, Kullby said, the Eagles were able to generate some great chances on the counter by attacking quickly.

"To the credit of Round Lake," Kullby said, "the Panthers also defended very well."

Wauconda 1, Grant 0: Wauconda scored in the second half to capture the Northern Lake County Conference match.
