Boys golf: Marmion wins West Aurora regional

With three of its top four scores in the 70s, Marmion's boys golf team edged Waubonsie Valley Tuesday for the championship of the Class 3A West Aurora regional at Orchard Valley.

The Cadets shot a 312, led by a 73 from senior Jimmy Morton. Waubonsie Valley (314) and Metea Valley (331) also advanced to next Monday's Glenbard East sectional at Glendale Lakes.

Junior Peter Thayer had a 76 for Marmion, junior Austen Velazquez a 79 and junior Will Barnhart shot 84 to round out the Cadets' card.

West Aurora junior Ryan Vanderway also advanced with a 74 and Blackhawks' sophomore Zac Uhm made the cut with an 87.

Metea Valley junior Scott Boyajlan was the meet medalist with a 71.

Class 1A at Byron: Aurora Christian junior Ryan Hochsprung shot a medalist-tying round of 77 at the Byron regional at Prairie View and will advance to next week's Stillman Valley sectional on the same course. He tied Jon Silvers of Byron, who won the medalist honors in a playoff. Also advancing as individuals were Elgin Academy freshman Johnny Yavari (86), Harvest Christian senior Drew Lewis (87), Aurora Christian junior Gabriel LaPapa (87) and Harvest Christian senior Joey Pepper (88). Rockford Christian won the team title with a 337, followed by Byron (346) and Rockford Lutheran (362). Harvest Christian just missed qualifying as a team, finishing fourth with a 365.
