Chicago Blackhawks granted LTIR relief for Hossa

As expected, the NHL will allow the Chicago Blackhawks to place Marian Hossa on long-term injured reserve and the team can thus gain salary-cap relief during the season.

Hossa and the team announced in June that the 38-year-old forward would not be able to play this season due to a skin condition. The NHL hired an independent doctor to examine Hossa, who has four years remaining on the 12-year deal he signed with the Hawks prior to the 2008-09 season. Hossa is slated to make $1 million a season until 2020-21.

The Hawks will place Hossa on LTIR on Wednesday, the first official day of the season.

Also Tuesday, the Hawks assigned forwards Alex DeBrincat and Tomas Jurco, defenseman Gustav Forsling and goalie J.F. Berube to Rockford. They also placed Jordin Tootoo on LTIR. The Hawks will likely call DeBrincat and Forsling up Thursday when they open the season against Pittsburgh at the United Center.

Watch for the Hawks to sign defenseman Cody Franson, who is in camp on a PTO, on Wednesday or Thursday.
