Wittenbrink earns national all-star invitation

When the high school boys soccer season wraps up for Ryan Wittenbrink this fall, he still will have one major highlighted remaining.

The Libertyville senior has been invited to the 2017 boys and girls high school soccer Fall all-American game that will be held on Dec. 2. in Orlando, Fla.

Wittenbrink was an all-state selection and captain of the Daily Herald's Lake County all-area team last fall.

On St. Patrick's Day of this year, he made his decision to verbal commit to Indiana.

As a sophomore, Wittenbrink helped lead coach Andy Bitta's Wildcats to the Class 3A state title.

As a junior, he finished with 19 goals and 12 assists.

Football

Northwestern sophomore Cameron Green (Stevenson) caught a 1-yard pass for the first touchdown of his collegiate career, and it gave the Wildcats a 10-7 lead in their 33-24 loss at Wisconsin.

Men's soccer

Augustana goal keeper Jeremey Klaber (Stevenson) has gotten the bulk of the minutes (380) in goal this season for the Vikings.

The Stevenson graduate recorded 11 saves, including one on a penalty kick. when the Vikings tied Simpson, which came into the match owning an 8-0-0 record.

Vikings junior Jack McKearnan (Warren) converted a penalty kick to give Augustana a 1-0 lead against Simpson. It was McKearnan's first goal of the season.

For the season, Klaber has a 2.09 goals against average and a save percentage of .745.

Klaber picked up a 1-0 shutout over host Coe in a nonconference match. The Kohawks did not attempt a shot in the final 30 minutes of play.

Women's volleyball

Carthage sophomore hitter Megan Behrendt (Lakes) led the Lady Reds with 14 kills in a dominating 3-0 win over Elmhurst.

Carthage moved to 10-3 on the season and 2-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin as the Lady Reds hit .265.

"I am really proud of the team," said coach Leanne Ulmer, a former head girls volleyball coach at Stevenson High School. "They were ready to go from the first serve. We have had so many tough battles with Elmhurst over the years. Every conference match is so big and to get this one in three was exciting!

"I thought Megan Behrendt was tremendous in all phases tonight. She is so dynamic and really was aggressive at the net."

Men's cross country

Augustana junior Rob Williams (Vernon Hills) took 23rd in 26:16 at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships in Bourbonnais. The Vikings placed fifth among 21 teams with a score of 128 points.

Women's soccer

Augustana junior Karleen Gomez (Grayslake Central) shares the team lead 3 goals and 7 points.

Gomez netted her third goal in the Vikings' 9-0 win over Lawrence at Thorson-Lucken.

The Vikings improved to 5-4 on the season and 1-0 in the CCIW.

Football

Augustana senior Grant Burke (Hersey) and freshman John Kappel (Wheeling) teamed up to sack Brock Bethke of Elmhurst for a 4-yard loss on a fourth-down play during the Vikings' 24-19 win.

Kappel led the defense with 7 solo tackles and 4 assists.

Burke has been part of four tackles for loss this season.

Men's tennis

Augustana's No. 2 doubles team of sophomore Scott Daluga (Libertyville) and freshman Guilherme Calixto broke open a match that was close early to finish off Michael Allee and Matt Zuccato of St. Ambrose 8-4. Despite a lineup missing four probable starters, Augustana blanked the Fighting Bees 9-0 at the Lower Campus Courts in Rock Island.
