Montini responds with team-themed triumph

A week ago, the Montini football team felt it let a victory slip away in a 1-point loss to Marmion.

The Broncos weren't about to do the same thing Friday.

Jumping out to an early 3-touchdown advantage, Montini cruised to a 56-27 Chicago Catholic Green win over De La Salle in its homecoming game in Lombard.

"We were disappointed in last week," said senior wide receiver Matthew Quaglia, who hauled in a pair of touchdown passes. "But we came back and probably had our best week of practice that we've had all year. We were champing at the bit to get back out there."

The home team used three quarterbacks in the contest, and all contributed to scores.

Nicholas Orlando started under center and put the Broncos up for good with a 71-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage.

Matthew Morrissey found the end zone from 1 yard out later in the first quarter and also connected with Quaglia for a 53-yard strike.

Bradley Norgle, who in addition saw time at tight end, had TD runs of 72 and 80 yards while throwing a touchdown pass to Quaglia as well.

"It was great to see," said Norgle, when asked about all three quarterbacks having success. "There is no animosity between us, we all see the field.

"And everything starts off in practice. We have a great group of coaches and they do a great job of getting everyone ready to play. Everyone stepped up."

Rounding out the scoring were a pair of short runs by Jake Karczewski.

"I thought the offense did a nice job," Montini coach Mike Bukovsky said. "That's kind of who we are offensively, we want to spread things around. We still have to clean some things up but it was a nice bounce back after last week.

"When you go through something like last week, you question a lot of things you are doing as coaches and players and you have to do some soul-searching. You are wondering how they are going to respond and they certainly did a nice job."

Montini, which got an interception in the end zone from Scott West, improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.
