Boys golf: Winds of fate favor Schaumburg against Hoffman Estates

Strong performances from Dan Meister and Nzelu Maitha led the Schaumburg boys golf team to a Mid-Suburban League victory over Hoffman Estates on Wednesday.

Meister fired a 41, and Maitha carded a 42 as the Saxons edged the Hawks 173-176 in breezy conditions at Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club.

Schaumburg improved to 5-6 as both teams closed out the MSL regular season.

"This year has been pretty steady," said Maitha. "Some good rounds, and some all right rounds."

"Like a lot of teams, it's been up and down for us," added Saxons coach Chris Zickert.

The teams will be back at the Bridges layout, which the Hawks call home, twice more in the near future.

Both the Mid-Suburban League tournament next Tuesday, and the Conant regional meet on Oct. 3, will be played at Bridges.

"This course can be really windy," said Maitha. "Developing a game (playing in windy conditions) can be advantageous here."

"When it's as windy here as it was today," added Hawks coach Todd Meador, "it makes the course a lot more challenging."

Hoffman Estates ended its regular conference season at 4-7, a significant improvement from last year's winless MSL campaign.

"We made a lot of progress this year," said Todd Meador. "For the most part, we've been pretty consistent. I'm very pleased with our season."

Alex Harrison earned honors on the day for Hoffman by shooting 39, while teammate Alex Mayani finished at 42.

"We count on Alex Harrison and Alex Mayani," said Meador. "They're our numbers 1-2, and they have a lot of pressure to be leaders. We've also got a freshman, Nathan Meister, who's been a nice surprise."

Tom Curcio (47), Kurt Foy (48) and Meister (48) all counted scores for the Hawks.

Nick Tudor (44) and Vince Giglio (46) contributed to the Saxons' win, and Zickert said his team is looking forward to the conference tournament and beyond after their performance Wednesday at Bridges.

"We're going to be seeing this course a lot the next couple of weeks," said Zickert, "so that's hope."
