Boys soccer: Elgin edges Batavia

The Elgin boys soccer team, ranked No. 5 in the Daily Herald Top 20, stayed hot by defeating Batavia 2-1 in Upstate Eight action Tuesday at Memorial Field. Improving to 7-0-2 overall, 2-0 in the UEC River, Omar Lopez and Pablo Perez powered the Maroons with scores. Jean Padilla and Rafael Perez each added assists while Martin Jimenez stymied the Bulldogs with 6 saves.

St. Charles North 3, CL South 0: Goalkeeper Piercarlo Ricossa shut out the Gators needing just 2 saves to advance the North Stars (6-1-2) in the PepsiCo Showdown. Matt Beaulieu, Joey Sommer and Jake Persenico each posted goals while Jameson D'Amico had 1 assist in a Chicago Top Soccer bracket win. It sets up a semifinal match Thursday with Upstate Eight rival Streamwood.

Streamwood 4, Soto 1: At the PepsiCo Showdown, Aldo Lazaro scored twice and Alex Chavez added a goal to advance the Sabres (8-2) in Chicago Top Soccer bracket. Alex Herrera had a goal and an assist each while and Christian Lopez tallied 1 assist. Keeper Daniel Dominguez notched 3 saves heading into its match against the North Stars Thursday.

St. Edward 7, De La Salle 0: The Green Wave turned the Meteors into dust in a PepsiCo Lungevity bracket quarterfinal win, improving their unblemished record to 11-0. AJ Franklin registered a hat trick while Josh Johansen (1 assist), Will Gaston (1 assist), Chase Brieger and Jackson Godfrey each added goals. Carlos Ibarra led St. Edward with 2 assists while Zach Olenek and Uriel Carachure each added one, giving pad to keeper Evan Sajtar who achieved a shutout with 5 saves.

Lockport 4, Huntley 3 (PKs): In a Michele Bingham bracket matchup at PepsiCo, the Red Raiders (3-6) had an answer for every Porter goal in regulation, but fell one short in penalty kicks which resulted in a 5-4 shootout loss on their home pitch. Sal Arnieri had 1 goal and 2 assists for Huntley while Adam Kaster and Drew Landoch each had goals.

Kaneland 5, Yorkville 0: Tucker Jahns dominated play as the Knights (4-3-1, 2-1) made quick work of the Foxes in Northern Illinois Big XII action. Jahns totaled a hat trick and 1 assist, including 2 goals in the first 20 minutes. Brian Bartholomew (1 assist) and Chaz Garcia also netted goals, as Kaneland jumped out to a 5-goal lead by the 49th minute. Devin Pierczynski dished 2 assists while Alex Dhom also assisted.

Westminster Christian 1, South Beloit 0: In Northeastern Athletic action, Will Kmeciak provided the only score for the Warriors (4-7, 1-3) while Lee Grasemann provided 1 assist.

Prairie Ridge 2, Cary-Grove 1: PR's 2-goal halftime lead held despite a second-half rally by the Trojans (1-4-1, 0-1) in Fox Valley Conference action. Riley Conroy scored the lone C-G goal, served up by Oscar Leon, and both Teddy Price and Sergio Lemus made 2 saves in net.
