Girls volleyball: Hersey edges feisty Wheeling in two sets

Hersey's girls volleyball team began defense of its Mid-Suburban East championship with a 25-23, 27-25 victory at Wheeling on Thursday night.

Kati Kaburov (12 kills, 9 digs), Amy Morgan (10 kills, 10 digs), Hayley Martin (5 kills) and Juliette Van Den Herik (4 kills) led the attack for the Huskies (6-3, 1-0) while setter Alessia Olhava was 80-of-81 with 30 assists.

Seniors Molly Twohig (21 digs) and Julia Coniglio (20 digs) led the back row while Janine Boyan, Kaburov and Martin each had a block.

Wheeling (6-8, 0-1) was led on attack by Nosa Igiehon (9-12, 7 kills), Nicole Nguyen (23-26, 7 kills) and Rugile Jaciunas (13-14, 3 kills).

Jazmyn Veloso was 7-for-7 with an ace while Jessica Janowski was 72-of-72 setting for 19 assists. Nguyen (17 digs) and Veloso (13 digs) led the Wildcats' back row.

Barrington d. Palatine: Peyton Tilly (14 kills) and Andi Capel (8 Kills, 9 points) led the attack for Barrington (7-3, 1-0) which opened its MSL West season with a dramatic 25-13, 22-25, 29-27 triumph over visiting Palatine (5-3, 0-1).

Other key players for the Fillies were Tara Kozak (7 assists), Felicia Guagliardo (14 assists, 6 points, 1 ace) and Suzana Andrade de Oliveira (12 digs, 8 points, 1 ace).

Buffalo Grove d. Rolling Meadows: Host Buffalo Grove (7-3, 1-0) opened play in the Mid-Suburban East with a 25-16, 21-25, 25-17 win as junior Claire Ferris led the attack with 17 kills followed by Mary Nowlan (7), Lauren Horvath (6) and Sasha Rozhko (5).

Maggie Streckert (3 aces) handed out 29 assists for the Bison, who received 8 digs from Riley Cross and 6 from Ferriss. Cross also had 2 aces while Ferris and Nowlan each had 1.

Natalie Anderson led RM with 7 kills followed by Natalie Klancnik (6), Elise Kowalski (5) and Leticia Avellaneda (5).

Mallory King served 4 aces for Meadows with 10 assists while Klancnik had 13 assists. Macie Robinson, Anderson and Kowalski each 10 digs. Eleanor Errico recorded 3 blocks.

Prospect d. Elk Grove: Meghan Meredith and Colleen Palczynski each put down 6 kills while Grace Cacini and Sloane Petlak both had 3 in visiting Prospect's MSL East opening 25-17, 25-17 win over EG (1-8, 0-1).

Valerie Thomas led the back row with 12 digs while Emma Cogan served 5 aces. Gianna Russo (9 assist) and Sarah Skaggs (8 assists) set the attack for the Knights (1-4, 1-0).

Conant d. Hoffman Estates: Kristina Loznjakovic (5 kills), Yuri Hara (4) led the attack for visiting Conant (3-6, 1-0) which won the MSL West opener 26-24 25-17. Burcin Asilturk and Fiona Fennelly had 2 aces for the Cougars while Amanda Klingsporn (20 digs) and Joanne Cho (10) led the back row.

Loznjakovic and Fiona Fennelly had 5 setting assists.

Hoffman (0-7, 0-1) was led on attack by U'daria Smith (4 kills. 2 aces, 6 digs), Patricia Wadas (3 kills, 6 blocks), Emily Hunt (4 kills, 1 block) and Jessica Jurewicz (3 kills). Ashley Poland had 15 digs and 2 aces while setter Kathleen Gueco handed out 11 assists.

St. Viator d. Vernon Hills: The visiting Lions (7-4) won the 'Volley For a Cure' match 25-15, 25-16 as Kate Nottoli, Kendall Claffey and Michaela Mueller each had 4 aces.

The attack was led by Catherine Hickey (33-36, 7 kills), Nottoli (10-11, 5 kills), Claffey (15-16, 5 kills) as Mueller was 72-of-73 setting with 22 assists. Carrie Leazer and Mueller collected 8 digs and Joy Bertagna had 5.
