Girls volleyball: Lakes handles Vernon Hills

Erica Grant had 8 kills and 6 digs, as Lakes' girls volleyball team hiked its season-opening winning streak to 10 matches with a 25-22, 25-9 win over visiting Vernon Hills in nonconference action Wednesday night.

"Another big team win as all Eagles made a positive impact on the court," coach Jenni Florian said.

Keelan Bell added 3 kills and 2 blocks for Lakes (10-0), while her sister Devinn Bell dished out 9 assists. Alyssa Bombicino contributed 8 digs.

A sore back sidelined Vernon Hills senior outside hitter Taylor Harte. The Cougars started four sophomores and came out strong in the first set and start of the second set, coach Arian Colton said, before ultimately falling to a "strong, aggressive" Lakes team.

Vernon Hills sophomore Emma Ginster tallied 2 aces, and senior libero Aleen Lim controlled the Cougars defense with 19 digs.

Mundelein d. Zion-Benton: Alexis Naddy slammed 9 kills, and the Mustangs rallied to win their North Suburban Conference opener 17-25, 25-20, 25-20.

Mundelein (6-9) also got big contributions from Isabella Cartland (5 kills, 3 aces, 14 digs), Faith Krabbe (17 assists, 4 kills, 9 digs), Gillian Paul (4 kills) and Diana Orozco (14 digs).
