Boys soccer: Kaminski connects, and Lake Zurich tops Cary-Grove

Lake Zurich junior Zak Kaminski wasn't quite sure how he scored with his back to the net Tuesday.

"I hit it over my head backward, over the keeper, and it went in," Kaminski explained of his second goal of the season. "Maybe it can be called an overhead chip, but it was no way close to a bicycle kick. I've never really done that for a shot. I have hit the ball over me for some flicks and stuff. But that's really not a normal shot."

Kaminski's goal helped Lake Zurich get past host Cary-Grove 2-0 in a nonconference match. David Zaccarine scored the Bears' other goal.

Kaminski opened the scoring in the 20th minute. The goal was set up off a throw-in that went off the head of Andrew Pytlak, before landing at the feet of Kaminski.

"I thought (the shot) might go over the net because it didn't have a lot of power on it and the keeper was out a bit," Kaminski said. "I was able to slot it behind him. I was just trying to make contact and put it on the frame rather than focus on where to hit it. Actually, that shot could have gone anywhere."

Zaccarine scored in the 33rd minute off a pass from Joe Heffernan, as Lake Zurich improved its record to 4-3.

"We've been working on a lot of different things as the season has gone on," Lake Zurich coach Mike Schmitz said. "I thought we competed every time out (in the Barrington tournament). I thought we played well there, but we didn't get the results we wanted. It's still early in the season."

Lake Zurich keeper Connor Trebac made 12 stops for his fourth shutout this season. He got help from defenders Michael Blasko, Heffernan, Lukas and Pytlak.

"I thought we cleaned things up a bit and our defense played a lot better in the second half," Schmitz said. "Which we wanted to translate to our offense."

It was a frustrating game offensively for Cary-Grove (1-3-1).

"We had chances, but we didn't capitalize on them, and that was the difference," Cary-Grove coach Mark Olson said. "(Lake Zurich) had a couple of chances and they capitalized on it. Give them credit. After (Lake Zurich) got the first goal, they picked up the pace of play.

"We've had different players that have played in different positions and they're getting a lot of experience. We just had a couple of letdowns."
