Boys soccer: Antioch takes top honors in IMSA tourney

Antioch's boys soccer team finished off a strong weekend by winning the IMSA tournament Saturday.

The Sequoits started the day by earning a 1-1 draw with the host school, as Gabe Tijerina converted a penalty kick for their lone goal.

Antioch (3-1-1) then blanked Joliet Catholic 4-0. Tijerina knocked in another penalty kick and also scored on an assist from Jason Wood for his fourth goal of the season. Krystian Nikolov and R.J. Vazquez also had goals for Antioch. Peter Boeh added an assist, as did Wood. Sequoits keeper Noah Boehm notched his second shutout.

Stevenson 3, Rolling Meadows 1: At Glenbrook South, the Patriots scored 3 goals in the first half and captured third place in the tournament.

Ryan McGrogen, Luka Lezhava and Borler Wu had goals for Stevenson (3-2, 3-1 tourney). Steven O'Reilly, Wu and Ethan Kalis notched assists.

Round Lake wins twice: In Wisconsin, the Panthers got a goal from Misael Tellez on a 40-yard free kick in going 2-0 in the Border Battle Pride tournament.

Round Lake shut out Tremper 2-0, as Tony Fonseca had a goal and an assist. Alejandro Galindo also scored, while Ricky Orozco picked up an assist. Johnny Campa made 2 saves in earning the clean sheet.

Tellez's second-half goal highlighted the Panthers' 4-1 win over tournament-host Indian Trail. Rudy Bernal scored twice, while Jesus Ramos started the scoring off an assist from Orozco. Ulises Nuno had 4 saves in net for Round Lake.

Lakes 2, Vernon Hills 0: On Friday, Jeff Milostan and Brett Holmes each scored a goal and assisted on each other's, as the host Eagles won the nonconference match.

Danny Wieczorek had 8 saves for his second shutout for Lakes (4-1).

"For as long as Lakes has been around, there has always been the Vernon Hills, and the game is only always tense and close," Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said. "This game was no exception. Each team played quality soccer, each team had their share of scoring opportunities, and each team played some stellar defense."

Milostan scored in the first half, his fifth of the season, when he took a pass from Holmes and outpaced pursuing defenders to slot his past the Vernon Hills goalie, Kullby said. Then 12 minutes into the second half, Milostan passed off the ball to Brett Holmes, who one-timed his shot that lofted over the goalie and just under the bar.
