Girls golf: Barrington wins 39th straight in MSL

Barrington's freshman standout from a year ago was out of town on Thursday.

But the Fillies freshman ace of this fall was in town, and the new kid on the block delivered the best round of her young high school career.

With sophomore Caroline Smith playing in an invite-only AJGA event in South Carolina, rookie Stephanie Su was ready to gain the spotlight at the Buffalo Grove Golf Club.

Su converted a downhill, left-to-right 7-foot putt for birdie to cap off a medalist-round of 38 and help lead the Fillies (161) past host Buffalo Grove (185) and Elk Grove (219).

Barrington (8-0) now has 39 straight wins in the Mid-Suburban League dating back to the 2014 season when it lost to Prospect.

Following Su were teammates Nicole Ciskowski (39), Olivia Lee (42), Swetha Seshadri (42), Ishani Majmudar (42).

Su was playing in the No. 2 spot on Thursday.

"She usually plays No. 3," said Fillies coach Jodi Schoeck. "Caroline was out of town today so Stephanie stepped in and really did well. She was already finished when I got up to her on the last hole and she said 'I did alright.'Then I look at her score card and realize what a special round she had. I am very proud of her."

She became the third different medalist for the Fillies this season.

"It feels great," said Su who had 6 pars, 2 bogeys and the birdie. "It shows how much work can be done, and how it pays off on the course. It's great because the team is always cheering me on and coach (Schoeck) is always watching me, telling me to stay positive and away assisting me if I need any help."

Wisconsin recruit Ciskowski helped out the Fillies' chances with her round of 39.

"Nicole just comes out and does her thing." Schoeck said. "It's businesslike for her. And these were tough conditions today. We weren't used to the cool weather and this wind was crazy. You really had to think it through.

"Without Caroline, it gave all the girls a chance to score," Schoeck added. "We've got three more MSL matches and a couple of more hard meets coming so we're just looking to keep pace and keep bettering our games."

Su began the game four years ago and got very serious in seventh grade.

"My dad played and he got me into it," Su said. "I didn't start off that well. I was maybe 'average' and then I realized if I wanted to get to the top I needed to do all that work. And once it started to pay off, I loved the feeling of it and I said 'OK, let's keep doing this.' "

Buffalo Grove was led by Jasmine Yi's round of 39.

"Great round," said BG coach Matt Myers. "She has been really strong for us this year (season-low 2-under 35 vs. Maine South two weeks ago) and she has been a great leader. She has played some really nice rounds out here this season and we're expecting big things the rest of the season."

Completing the Bison score card were Zoe Childs (45), Alisha Patel (48) and Claire McLoone (53).

"Barrington is really talented, and deep, too," said Myers, whose two-time defending MSL East champions are 6-2. "They definitely came out and shot a nice number."

Elk Grove, playing its first MSL match of the season, was led by Maggie Cronin (52), Reyna Shino (52), Teodora Evtimova (52), and Grace Majer (54).

"This was tough test for us," said Grenadiers coach Kristen Gierman. "I think the kids continue to improve and have shown that each year. We've got to spend a little more time working around the greens and really get a feel for things from 100 yards and in. I think that will continue to put us in the right direction."

Glenbrook North d. Hersey: Stephanie Suh eared medalist honors for Glenbrook North (173) which topped Hersey (205) at Rob Roy Golf Course (par 36) in Prospect Heights.

Krista Thuer (44), Claire Rogowski (47), Mara Slosar (56) and Kelly Hannon (58) were top scorers for the host Huskies.
