Boys soccer: Tie with GBN puts Libertyville in Showcase finale

Libertyville's boys soccer team met up with Glenbrook North in the final game of pool play in the Northside College Showcase tournament on Thursday night, and the match had the makings of a postseason battle.

After a grueling 80 minutes, the teams settled for a 0-0 tie in Winnetka.

Libertyville (3-0-1, 2-0-1 in the tourney) moved on to the final against host New Trier (5-0, 3-0). The Trevians, who will play Libertyville at 3 p.m. Saturday, beat St. Charles East 3-0 ton win the other pool.

"It was a great team that we played," Libertyville coach Kevin Thunholm said of Glenbrook North. "We've played a lot of games in a short amount of time and we're a little banged up. We had some opportunities, and they had some opportunities. We had some missed opportunities in the box and couldn't finish. There are no complaints. That's why I like playing in this tournament. Every team is high quality - a lot of fast plays and a lot of pressure situations."

Glenbrook North keeper Daniel Spencer made 6 of his 8 stops in the second half. Libertyville's combo of Thomas Pearson and Zack El Ghatit combined to make 5 saves.

"It was a great environment," Glenbrook North coach Paul Vignocchi said. "I thought our guys stepped up to the challenge. Libertyville was a great-coached team, and it will be exciting to see them advance in the playoffs. (The match) had its highs, lows and excitement for 80 minutes. I thought our defense did a great job."
