Girls volleyball: Barrington serves up a third three-set win

The best start by Barrington's girls volleyball team in senior Andi Capel's four years as a starter continued on Wednesday night.

And it resumed with a familiar ring to it.

The Fillies won their third straight three-set match over a Lake County team.

This time, it was a 25-10, 21-25, 25-18 nonconference win over visiting Grayslake Central as the Fillies won their home opener and raised their record to 3-0.

"This is amazing, my first time in four years we have gone 3-0 to start a season," said Capel, an 5-foot-10 outside hitter who put down 5 kills with 8 digs, 11 service points and 2 aces. "We've gone to three sets each match but we definitely have been doing pretty well finishing them. With our energy, we definitely have a promising season ahead of us."

One promising prospect is 5-7 senior libero Suzana Andrade, a foreign exchange student from Brazil who speaks English, Portuguese and some Spanish.

She also talks a good game in the backcourt, where she led the Fillies with 18 digs.

"Oh my goodness, we are so fortunate to have her," Capel said. "I would say in the beginning of the season one thing we struggled a bit with was the back row and defense. When she got here, it was just amazing. I've connected with her so much. Every time I'm in the back row with her, it's like I know were going to get the ball up."

The Fillies got up 11-4 in Set 1 thanks to a service run of 7 straight points (including 4 aces) by senior Sydney Moseler, who came in to play the back row,

Later in the set, classmate Sara Casaletto entered to play defense and served 4 straight points, including a pair of aces for a 22-89 advantage.

"We like to use our serving specialists," said Fillies coach Michelle Jakubowski. "They're seniors and they come in and do a great job."

Junior middle blocker Paige Ramel did a great job at the net, producing a match-high 5 blocks along with 6 kills while junior Peyton Tilly also had 6 kills. They took their cues from the setting duo of junior Tara Kozak (9 assists) and freshman Felicia Guagliardo (7).

"Paige did a great job blocking," Jakubowski said. "We did a great job blocking. Even if we didn't block it, we touched it, ran it down and ran an offense. We were just being strong at the net and able to put balls away. Peyton Tilly did a great job of finishing."

The Rams made sure the match didn't finish in two sets.

Senior Lauren LaBeck served them to a 3-0 lead, which increased to 7-3 on an ace by junior libero Abby Marassa. The Rams gained their biggest cushion at 18-11 before Barrington rallied for a 21-21 tie.

But a kill by Rams senior Michelle Maraist made it 22-21 and started a set-ending 4-point run.

Barrington got a big jump in Set 3 as Andrade served 6 straight points for a 6-0 lead, and the visitors never got closer than 2 points.

"I'm so happy to be here," said Andrade, who played about five competitive high school matches a season in Brazil. "I also played beach volleyball. I always wanted to come here and I'm finding out this is the best decision I ever made. I'm in a program here for one school year and I love it here."

"This is very intense for her," Capel said. "But I think she is loving it. We are a very welcoming team."

And a team that showed it welcomes the opportunity to serve (8 aces).

"Barrington is a very good serving team," said Rams coach Jason Janczak, who played boys volleyball at Prospect for coach Mike Riedy. "She (Jakubowski) has them cooking very fast. We have a whole bunch of new girls playing together right now, so we are in the middle of a process. Barrington is the type of team we want to be like in terms of speed. They are the best servers we have seen and this is our eighth match (3-5). When you have that weapon and with their hitters, that is a tough combination."

Leading the Rams' attack was junior Cassidy Beshel (12 kills), junior Amber Moser (6 kills) and Maraist (3 kills). LaBeck was 49-of-49 stetting with 25 assists and 3 aces. Marassa led the back row with 20 digs.

"In our mind, we have to figure out how do we get out of that rut when it was 6-0 (in third set)," Janczak said. "Do we just roll over or do we battle back? That's part of the process we are talking about. I was very proud of how our girls played defense and offense. Serve receive is a work in progress."

The Fillies have been working hard on coming out strong after losing first sets in their first two matches.

"We're still working things out," Jakubowski said. "It's a process and I'm proud of them."

Barrington will see its first tournament action on Saturday at Jacobs.

"We'll see a lot of Fox Valley teams," Jakubowski said. "It will show us where were at. We're excited about it."
